Yesterday's election produced a Democratic win in Indianapolis with Holtzman elected mayor and a council majority aligned with the party.
The Missouri Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian church met at Cumberland Church with growing attendance. Rev. J. M. Hubbert was elected moderator. Opening sermon by Rev. J. H. Tharp followed devotional led by Rev. L. N. Montgomery. Committees formed on education missions church extension publication ministerial relief Sabbath school finance and other topics. Tonight’s address by Rev. W. H. Black. Thursday’s schedule listed with devotions business reports and speeches.
One of the largest flags ever bought by the government draped the equestrian statue of General Sherman in Washington. Two hundred veterans in blue, missing limbs from the sixties, sit on either side to symbolize the army’s flanks. unveiling scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.
Rev S S Martin of 218 West Fifth street barely averted disaster when a fire started by a child’s lighted match ignited papers under a couch. He wheeled the couch into an uncarpeted room and extinguished the flames, suffering burns to his hands while the door casing near the couch also burned.
Harry Spillers was arraigned in police court this morning on disturbing the peace charge. He pleaded not guilty and the case was set for Thursday morning. Spillers is alleged to have kicked and abused Grover Goshorn on Tuesday.
Paducah Kentucky October 14 twenty five girls operators in the local office of the East Tennessee Telephone Company struck for higher wages and for the discharge of chief operator Mrs Peacock. Twenty operators were brought from Nashville Memphis Louisville and Evansville to take their places but after three aggressors were discharged the others returned to work and Mrs Fleming of New Orleans succeeded Mrs Peacock.
Rt. Rev. John Joseph Kain archbishop of St. Louis died at St. Agnes sanitarium near Baltimore at 6 25, following a three week illness from appendicitis and a recent stroke. He was surrounded by relatives, doctors, and sisters as his health steadily declined.
3100 members of Zion's restoration host led by John Alexander Dowie boarded trains from Zion City to New York to "restore the kingdom." About 7000 people gathered to hear Dowie, 500 guards were posted on trains to maintain order and keep reporters off board. Dowie paid 50000 dollars to railroads. adults paid 15 and children half fare. first train carried mostly women and children.
Dijon reports that King Victor Emmanuel III and the Queen of Italy arrived in France this morning and travel toward Paris for a visit with President Loubet.
Berwick Illinois October 14 burglars blew the safe at Farmers State bank securing two thousand eight hundred dollars this morning in a bold daylight robbery.
Walter Johnson, convicted of killing a six year old boy, was taken from the jail this morning and lynched in Hamilton Montana.
Manila reports C. J. Johnson and George Herman two Missamis Min danao constabulary officers who fled with a stolen boat after looting government funds. Johnson was killed by a crew member while Herman, wounded, killed four crewmen and forced two overboard. Herman hid near Nestos with Johnson's body found aboard the boat.
Lexington South Carolina Oct 14 concluding arguments in the trial of ex Lieutenant Governor Tillman charged with the murder of Editor Gonzales were made by Colonel Croft. Croft argued that if Tillman believed he was in danger he could be justified in shooting Gonzales even if no real danger existed.
London reports a more hopeful Russo Japanese stance as Tokio negotiations may recognize Russia’s paramount rights in Manchuria in exchange for Korea remaining in Japan’s sphere. The possible accord could blot out the war cloud.
