In Coaldale near Yamaqua on October 14 an underground gas explosion at colliery No. 8 killed five workers and injured 11. While building a dam to back up water a gangway fire was set off by the blast, releasing 100000 gallons of water and a series of four additional explosions that tore the gangway and hurled workers. Rescue parties worked for about an hour and recovered the dead and injured.
Miss Ida M Malmsbury of St Louis has been appointed kindergarten teacher at the Sac and Fox Indian School in Oklahoma, reflecting a federal education appointment for Native communities.
Lieut. Col. J G Hoff testified on Chickamauga camp conditions noting close encampment crowding and limestone prevents deep sinks, plus initial medical supply shortages. He said beds sometimes needed on floors, nurses per patient figures disputed, and delays in tent flooring. Documents show Alger Miles conflicts and orders shaping Santiago campaign. Miles to investigate Indian affairs in Saint Paul with four staff members.

Mrs Sherman wife of former Secretary of State John Sherman suffered a paralysis stroke at her K street home in Washington.
