The jury returned a verdict of not guilty for Jimmy McManigal in the Captain Youngs murder case. Prosecutors argued strong evidence pointed to McManigal, but the panel found insufficient proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
James H. McManigal, on trial ten days for the 1898 murder of Capt. Thos. Young in Lexington, was acquitted after two ballots. The jury foreman was Ed Ford. McManigal sobbed as the verdict came. his family, not present, joined him after. Public reaction divided over the verdict and prosecutorial conduct.
A Missouri Pacific conductor resumes duty after a brief enforced layoff following a published photo of him with a traveling man as they raised drinks. Reports indicate several brakemen and conductors along the line between Pleasant Hill and Joplin faced similar suspensions.
