Governor Dockery issues the Thanksgiving proclamation designating Thursday November 26 as a day of praise and prayer. He notes Missouri has prospered over the past year with expanded industries and new fields of enterprise, calling on all Missourians to give thanks to Almighty God.
The Louisiana Purchase Exposition board accepted James L. Blair's resignation and elected Judge Franklin Ferriss of St. Louis circuit court to fill the vacancy. Ferriss will retire from the bench to assume the new duties and also become general counsel, replacing James A. Seddon. The National Archery Association meeting to decide national championships will be held with the Olympic Games in St. Louis on September 19, 20 and 21.
The coal strike worsens in Denver with 400 mill workers laid off as overland cotton mills close. The Denver tramway warns only ten days of coal remain and requests militia protection to operate its Leyden mine amid the fuel shortage.
The London Mail condemns the Roxeburgh and Goelet wedding in New York, calling it a debauch of color perfume and excess and noting it did not occur in Britain.
The adjutant general's annual report lists 3681 officers and 55,000 enlisted for the U S land forces. During the year 25 officers and 857 men died or were killed. Hospital corps scouts and Porto Rican regiment add 8200 men. Desertions exceed 5000. Organized militia totals 116,542.
Rumor around New York banking circles claims J Pierpont Morgan will retire from active business on January 1. No confirmation exists and associates note Morgan faced criticism over steel securities shrinkage and a shipbuilding scandal. The ticker calls the retirement report untrue and even ridiculous.
James Thornberry was released from jail today on a $500 bond signed by C. E. Mellor after being charged with stealing chickens. The case proceeds as it moves through the legal process.
The marriage of Miss Mary Poage to Amos A. Knoop prosecuting attorney of Morgan County will be solemnized this evening at 8 30 oclock at the home of the bride mother Mrs Julia Poage 601 West Fifth street. Rev J J Pritchett will perform the ceremony. Decorations include chrysanthemums and green foliage.
A Nov 9 cable from U S Minister Beaupre reports Bogota crowds on Nov 8 cried against Marroquin, a mass meeting urged change, a prominent general called for the president's resignation, and government troops dispersed the mob with injuries and deaths.
Frank Smith a negro stabbed an Austrian in the back near the White River railroad tunnel south of Aurora. Austrians tied him to a tree intending to starve him. Hunters freed him. he lay in critical condition and jailed at Galena. Rumors of a revenge gang from a railroad camp north of the tunnel circulated.
The Walter Holman murder case targeting Welcome Parsons near Beaman is ready for trial with a state witness list of ten to twelve and the defense citing self defense after Parsons allegedly attacked with a knife. Thirty to forty subpoenas issued. character witnesses expected. Jury includes Al Adams John Teeters J S Stephens E O Hansbrough P H Longan T R Fleming Spencer Haynes Cam Gentry T T Wells C L Turner G H Anderson and T A Majors.
Labor leaders met in Chicago to plan the largest street car strike yet. A mass meeting tonight will set a walk-out time, likely 6 a.m. tomorrow, as workers demand a 20 percent raise and union rights reform after the company refuses to meet those terms.
Rev. W. T. Allan rector of Calvary Episcopal church tendered his resignation to the vestry last night and it was accepted. The resignation takes effect the first Tuesday after Easter. Plans for the future are not known. He is a noted preacher in Sedalia and may move to another church.
Henry Burkhold, longtime cashier of the Franklin Bank in Cincinnati, was removed by the directors. He is said to be financially involved and to have drawn about 70 000 dollars from the bank without proper collateral. Burkhold began with the bank as a porter forty years ago.
The Epworth League of the Fifth Street Methodist Church south will host a reception Friday evening in the church parlors from eight to ten o'clock. Decorations by E W Shultz feature chrysanthemums and portieres of vines.
