A cable car disaster in Kansas City leaves two women dead as the car breaks loose and dashes down the incline. Investigators probe the braking system and operator actions amid a crowded street scene.
A Twelfth street cable train derailed on an incline injuring and killing many in Kansas City Kansas. Nellie Luscombe died instantly while Carrie Mooney and Harmon Watkins were fatally hurt. Thirty three others were badly injured, mostly women, with several department store clerks among the victims. A dense fog amplified the horror as victims lay strewn along the viaduct.
Kentucky goes Democratic as Governor Beckham defeats Col Morris B Belknap by about 15 000 in a bitterly fought election. Louisville reports a tense day as the result appears assured and Republicans concede Beckham's victory.
One of the season’s grand society events will be the Poteet Baird wedding at the Cumberland Presbyterian church. The ceremony features green and pink decor, a floral bell altar piece, and a lace gown with roses. Attendants include Al Poteet and Miss Lillian Poteet, with bridesmaids in pink and ushers listed. A reception follows at the Baird home before the couple departs for a Missouri Pacific train honeymoon eastward.
The Ladies' Musical club met this morning to present a Mozart program led by Miss Lamy and Miss Scott. Readings included Development of Opera by Mrs. Rockwell, Minuet piano solo by Mrs. Yancey, Mozart life story by Miss Lamy, The Marriage of Figaro sketch by Miss Nina Harris, Page Song from Figaro by Miss Meyers, Fantasie Sonata piano piece by Miss Alice Brown, Don Giovanni soprano aria by Mrs. Yancey, and Anecdotes of Mozart by the club.
In the afternoon session Isaac Jackson withdrew his not guilty plea and pleaded guilty to larceny earning a two year penitentiary sentence.
The candidate won by 31 632 overall while carrying all boroughs except Queens. Manhattan and the Bronx showed a 5663 and 20 767 plurality, Brooklyn 20 767, and Richmond 763, with Queens favoring Shepard by 561.
A local forecast suggests possible showers and cooler temperatures tonight. Thursday looks fair with colder conditions affecting the eastern and southern portions.
Clarence Hearn pleaded guilty in criminal court to robbery of the Smithton bank and was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary. The case stemmed from a bank robbery incident in Smithton.
John A. Lee testified that money was divided in a hotel room with bank officers and a hotel clerk verifying the transaction. The testimony appears in a Scripps-McRae press association report.
Returns show 86 Republicans and 51 Democrats in the legislature with McClellan winning by over 63 000 in the state race. Tammany gains a 37 vote aldermanic majority while Grout and Fornes, fusion-turned-Tammany picks, win key posts. Devery runs weakly. Boston election results show Governor Bates re elected by 35000 votes, down 2000 from the prior contest. Republicans preserve a large majority in the legislature but lose two seats to the Socialists.
Kansas City Oratorio Society selects Glenn H. Woods as director to replace Carl Busch who resigned. Woods serves as music director at Manual Training High School and as organist choirmaster at St. Pauls Episcopal church. He formerly led Sedalia's Gentlemen's Musical club and won top directing prize in the 1902 Kansas City May festival. D Elmer Harley chosen as accompanist.
