The Nehemgar club at the High School heard J H Thomas discuss politics exposing hollow promises and the low turnout of the better classes at primaries. He argued candidates overpromise and memory fades after election, noting some honorable exceptions and suggesting compulsory education to improve citizenship.
List of railroad workers stationed in Texas and nearby towns with illnesses and injuries. George Taylor and others in Denison, Atoka, Franklin Junction, Hewitt, Pittsboro, and Burleson. Conditions include fever lumbago boils abscess influenza scalded foot and other ailments.
Miss Nannie Bloemker visits Ft. Scott as Chas. Goodwin lays off. Roadmaster Rockwell of the Katy travels to Tipton. Rev J M Van Wagner and wife and Mrs A J Warren depart for Chattanooga. L F Sheldon, Missouri Pacific telegraph superintendent, arrives from Kansas City. Will Beal and Slim McVey return from Sweeney where they worked on the rock crusher. Katy’s No 2 passenger run remains the longest with one crew. M Curry resigns as Missouri Pacific roadmaster at Butler. T H Gault named successor. The Katy chops closed yesterday.

A controversial medical work linked to Louise Muller is touted as the sole medical library for her healing method. Reports describe her claim that all sickness can be cured from a single book titled Albertus Magnus, detailing Egyptian secrets and natural arts for humans and animals.
A respected freight and passenger railroad manager in the western states is described as highly successful, superior in leadership, and universally liked for his gentlemanly conduct and broad popularity.
A new frame school building 36 by 38 feet will be erected seven miles east of Sedalia this summer on Buck Powell's farm site. It will replace the 1844 structure and be dedicated with a barbecue on the last Saturday in August. Notable local citizens who studied there include Cliff Herd Sheriff Williams W Powell Geo Shively Mrs John R Wallace and Bell Hutchinson.
John Busch was arraigned in police court for drunkenness and disturbing the peace. The case was continued for investigation by Dr. Dunlap who believes Busch is mentally unbalanced. Cases against Will Oliver and Johnston, colored, for fighting and disturbing the peace were also continued.
Chas Williams returned from Kansas City after finalizing plans for the large excursion of colored clubs to this city on Sunday May 21.
Mrs. Allen exposed an affair leading to Wes Witcher chasing her husband to Florence. Judge Burr jailed Allen who refused to surrender money, then conceded after a wager ruse but withheld $27 of $36. Allen left angry, spent $5, and seeks the remaining $27 held by the court while authorities and Mrs. Allen plan to restrain him.
Sedalia Times shifts to the southeast corner of Pacific and Washington. Local business notes include a new restaurant The Second Missouri near the Missouri Pacific depot, and M. McGinley laying new walks at a grocery rear. Sunday services at the Southern Methodist church include the Lord's Supper after the sermon. An intoxicated man, unnamed, was arrested at Third and Engineer. Evan Becher of Lexington, Mo visits for Armour Packing Co. Final settlements completed for W. E. Harris and Jos. K. Yeater. Funeral held for John Sherman of Georgetown from Sacred Church.
W. C. Finke and A. Rice capitalists of California Missouri are in the city negotiating with Dr. H. W. Wood for the lease or purchase of his opera house. Rice is a banker and Finke a noted citizen and business man who loves amusement.
Corporal Jesse Allen and Private Edward Dawson of the 16th U S Infantry escorted two deserters to Fort Leavenworth this afternoon. Allen had been left behind last spring when the 20th U S Infantry passed toward Cuba. Local girls once cut the brass buttons from his coat.
C M Pendleton received a telegram from the general ticket agent at St Louis stating that the gunboat Nashville will be in St Louis and open for inspection by visitors Saturday and Sunday before leaving Monday.

Hessie Rowlett three years old daughter of Mr and Mrs Ed Rowlett of Newland eight miles northeast of Sedalia fatally burned yesterday afternoon at four and died at 11 80 last night She was playing in the yard with her brothers ages five and six when she caught fire Her father heard her cries and put out the flames but she had inhaled smoke She will be buried at Longwood cemetery tomorrow.
Wa R Dirron of Co F 18th Infantry writes from Iloilo Panay Isles April 3 1899 describing fighting natives high prices scarce ice and beer $1 a bottle whisky $2 to $5 per quart fish fruit and crops in the area and plans to return home in two months. He mentions Sedalia men and a map of the M E T railroad issued by General Freight and Ticket Agent F B Drew.
