Jonathan Abbott is jailed after confessing to family mistreatment in a case tied to a baby found on a Ninth and Prospect doorstep last Saturday. The 20 year old woman, Clara, is identified as Abbott’s niece. Police file a warrant for her arrest as the couple reportedly lived as husband and wife in Sedalia.
In a related incident Ed bought whisky for medicinal use while another man, McVey, carried off the jugs. Officer Boull arrested McVey when he found him southbound on Third Street with the booze, taking him to the calaboose.
Both companies of the fire department were summoned to the East Sixth street home of Mrs. H. B. Hammond Saturday night. She attempted to light a gasoline stove that had been leaking and the sparks ignited the fuel, though the fire was quickly subdued.
Friday March 24 marks the Boston Store on 506 Ohio Street opening a new sew millinery line. Pattern hats drawn from Paris London and New York models, inviting customers to judge if the store has surpassed itself in quality and style.
Havana reports a Saturday night confrontation between police and residents leaving 30 to 50 wounded, with Police Captain Estampes among the injured. A second clash was reported Sunday as unrest continued.

LES BATTLE RUN AND LOST chronicles a boy who left home at age ten promising not to return until wealthy. The death notices honor Mrs. Wm. Noftsker and F. W. Marshall, a traveling salesman, who died at 43 of bladder inflammation. Marshall, famed across Missouri for medicines, leaves a widow, four children, and no trace of his fortune or fate.
An obituary note states a street commissioner’s three year old child died Sunday night of consumption aged three. She leaves a son and two daughters the youngest also three. Funeral at 2 pm Tuesday from 504 West Fourth. Mrs. Marshall, an orphan, is left without funds with a dependent family and plans to return to Joplin where she has friends.
Citizens say a young man named Price six miles north of Beaman recently returned from the army is critically ill with what appears to be smallpox. Two physicians who have seen him cannot diagnose the case.
George Cbhism was fined 18 dollars after a Saturday carving of Mary Johnson. The evidence indicates Mary may have used a knife first and she could face arrest. P B Gardner leased a first floor Hoffman building room to open a barber shop, coming from Lamonte.
Miss Cora Huckins sustained injuries in a runaway accident in Texarkana last week. Authorities report no serious injuries anticipated and that she is recovering.
Miss Minnie Leaking is placed in charge of the suit department at J Hail's, a new division created due to the store's growth.
NEL Jose Hewitt who joined last week and shipped to Porto Rico is to be detained in New York City and discharged. He is an ex convict but denied it on enlistment. A telegram was sent to intercept him in New York. His transportation was paid yet he will travel on foot returning. Lieut Dean received orders to discharge George Dorris without honor, barring voting or office. Chas Whitley, a colored man, will not be molested for deserting his wife. Six applicants were examined today with two passing. one carload will be examined this afternoon and another detachment tomorrow morning. C C Williams went to Kansas City this morning.
A tornado struck between Heflin and Edwardsville in Cleburne county causing extensive damage. The list of known dead includes Lewis Coffee tax assessor for the county and several family members: Mrs Coffee Lelia James Iulu Jacob and others aged 13 and 18. The Birmingham NEWS notes several wrecks and damages across the region with trains and other incidents reported.
Charles Witcher an ex convict livery stable employee in Springfield Missouri was arrested Saturday night by Officers Wright and Armstrong and jailed on a larceny charge after trunks belonging to a traveling man were found in a female inmate's room. He pleaded not guilty and has until Tuesday to prepare for his hearing. Real estate deals totaling about 13500 were reported in Smithton area and Jno N Taylor plans to move his music store to 521 South Ohio.
In Havana a public mulatto ball turned violent as police clashed with groups denying orders to disperse. Reserves were deployed after officers were attacked and robbed. gunfire persisted until ammunition ran out. The incident drew mixed public reaction with some defending and others denouncing police interference. American troops arrived later and arrests followed.
In Brunswick Georgia a political gathering at Jekyl Island hosts President McKinley Vice President Hobart Senator Hanna and other leaders as rumors swirl over whether Secretary Alger will resign. A cabinet retirement may be discussed at the conference with arrivals from Thomasville possible this evening.
A London cable dispatch reports renewed talk in court and diplomatic circles that Queen Victoria may abdicate in favor of the Prince of Wales after her trip to the south of France.

Jefferson City Mo March 20. Captain Given of the Sixth Missouri volunteers in Cuba did not secure keeping the regiment in service. Adjt Gen Bell has been notified the regiment will be mustered out at once.
Admiral Dewey reports the battleships Oregon and Irish arriving at Manila with the Oregon ready for duty. Separately, in South McAlester Oklahoma a coal mine strike continues as Mine Workers Union demands federal protection equal to operators.
Sheriff Williams and the courthouse gang show smiles as Lieut Dean informs the SENTI project of a pending return.
An 12 mile wide cyclone plowed through Cleburne county near Iron City injuring 20 to 25 and destroying about 50 buildings. Eight children including Verepoe Dollie Grover and John were among the victims. a baby was found dead in a chimney ruin and Bessie Coffee, badly injured, clung to her father. Cattle losses and scattered timbers marked the devastation as towns near Haflin reported wrecked farms and downpours continued in Knoxville.
The case of Wm. Anderson charged with libel was continued today in Judge Burr's court. The case of Riley Wells charged with assaulting O. C. Davis was also continued.
