Troops stationed at Fort Riley prepare for new orders as artillery units stand by. Commanders say movements depend on evolving front line decisions and supply lines. Local garrison continues training and readiness drills.
Fort Riley officers weigh the request of Ordnance Sergeant Charles R Thornhill, veteran of Stonewall Jackson's staff, who asks to be sent with other troops to the Atlantic seaboard after more than thirty years in service. Artillery batteries ready to move with 340 shrapnel rounds and canister and shell allotments, crews of 75 men and 48 horses each, plus officers, await orders and a releasing ordnance officer from Fort Riley.
