President told Democratic Senate leaders that if they push an amendment requiring concurrent House action to implement the Cuban reciprocity treaty he could call an extra congressional session in the fall. He did not specify a date but did not rule out the possibility.
The Republican leadership fixed next Thursday as the date for the final vote on the Cuban reciprocity treaty and an immediate adjournment of the extra Senate session. The steering committee also pledged a united front against any Panama treaty amendments to avoid jeopardizing approval in Colombia. An amendment requiring House concurrence on the Cuban treaty was accepted.
A freight train and switch engine collided in a fog at Olean New York. A dynamite car exploded wrecking it, two dynamite cars in the train did not explode. The crew escaped by jumping to safety.
Julius Cotton of Eldon Mo spends time in Sedalia tending Pettis county interests. He is ill in his room above the Hamilton restaurant with what doctors fear may be a light smallpox case. The health board quarantined the building this morning and will keep it for a day before removal and fumigation. Dr Tremaine of St Louis, a smallpox specialist and friend, says even if it is smallpox the patient should recover in a few days.
Fifteen coal operators on trial for conspiracy in restraint of trade and anti trust law violations had their cases dismissed by the court. The judge ruled any violation was a federal matter beyond state court jurisdiction.
Justice Day of the Supreme Court showed small improvement this morning after two specialists were summoned for consultation. The attending physician, Dr. Hardin, reported a well developed case of pneumonia and warned that grave danger still exists.
United States Judge Lorton issued a restraining order against Union Pacific on the minority stockholders' filing. The motion seeks to stop UP from voting its Southern Pacific stock in the upcoming annual directors election. The petition claims UP controls a majority of SP stock and aims to depress earnings and profits.
A city petition drive to pave Main street is nearly complete and likely to be introduced at the next council meeting. Heavily invested Peter Pehl signs Osage street paving while James Glass supports the plan. several property owners oppose, others undecided as to street condition versus paving benefits.
Dispatch from Livingstone county says a mine explosion in Cardiff this morning trapped fifteen men. Three bodies recovered, others feared dead as rescue efforts continue.
George Jameson of St. Louis, a delegate to the Wood men convention, lost his pocketbook yesterday containing about twenty dollars, a lodge certificate, and receipts. No trace of the missing item had been found by yesterday afternoon.
Willie Denison, colored, was arraigned before Justice Smith this morning on a charge of disturbing the peace. Evidence showed he had been making things lively at home. Justice Smith sentenced him to ten days in jail.
Sam Pace, an engineer with a broken arm from the No 8 Gasconade wreck last Tuesday morning, returned home from the St. Louis company hospital. He credits boots with saving him from being scalded to death as he freed his feet and escaped the burning wreckage.
Harry Remington, a former Sedalian and ex Emery Bird Thayer employee in Kansas City, is hired to head the shoe department at J D Hail Dry Goods to succeed Mike Quinn. The Sentinel welcomes Remington back to Sedalia.
The Mormon church will launch missionary activity in Russia under the czar’s religious liberty decree, then extend proselytizing to every civilized country. Salt Lake City dated March 13 states this plan as part of a worldwide outreach.
