A devastating disaster at Heppner leaves a fearful loss of life with an initial count of around three hundred bodies recovered. Rescue and relief efforts continue amid uncertainty over the full extent of casualties.
Hundreds of rescuers continue clearing wreckage after a cloudburst destroyed Heppner Oregon. Three hundred corpses were found by daylight and two hundred more are feared beneath debris or washed away. Coffins required and relief trains hindered by washouts as workers race to identify victims.
The Sedalia club gathered at J. B. Quigley’s East Broadway home to honor Rev. E W Clippinger upon resigning as president. Members presented a dozen silver knives and forks and silver spoons as the resignation and departure were marked by resolutions praising his service and wishing him success in a new field.
E W Clippinger writes of a lasting interest in the club and its future while lamenting a separation. The gathering ended with a luncheon hosted by Mr and Mrs Quigley and a round of cigars.
President Roosevelt departs for Charlottesville to witness the University of Virginia commencement with Mrs. Roosevelt and Ambassador McCormick. Governor Bailey fixes June 24 for a special Kansas legislature session to address flood damage relief prompted by the Kansas City area.
Thomas Donahue of Harrison New Jersey was seized for medical care after a Newark Buffalo game ended 1 to 0. He had been an ardent fan and grew increasingly excited, with friends reporting erratic behavior prompting authorities to detain him for treatment.
Washington date June 16 war warrants were issued for two more postoffice department employees over alleged fraudulent transactions while in government service. The identities will not be released until after apprehension.
The May weather in Salina Kansas recorded 17.33 inches of total precipitation, near the annual average for Central Kansas. May 28 brought 5.25 inches of rain, with seven thunder storms, five hail storms, three tornadoes and five floods. rain fell from May 10 to 17.
Johnnie O Dair, 15, son of D D O Dair of Kansas City Kansas, was found unconscious after drinking nearly a quart of whisky from a jug amid wreckage on James street. Police and Dr A W Little offered restoratives but he remains in danger. He had been water carrier for a debris removal crew.
The outlook calls for generally fair conditions tonight and Wednesday with cooler temperatures in the eastern portion tonight.
In St Francis Kansas on June 16 preliminary hearings began for Chauncey Dewey and two associates charged with the murder of Daniel Berry and his two sons. Militias guard the court. officials plan potential bail or transfer. Birch Berry narrates the attack while Roy Berry remains grievously wounded.
In Scranton on June 16 President Mitchell presented a grievance committee report. It criticizes operators for blocking District Presidents Duffy Fahey and Niccolls from the conciliatory board and urges unqualified endorsement of their appointment. The measure passed amid loud acclamations.
