Kansas City and Topeka start repair work after days of flood damage. crews assess water damage, clear debris, and begin restoring utilities and roadways. authorities urge caution as communities recover.
Missouri river levels drop to 34.4 feet and water supplies improve as relief work expands. Regular boat service resumes and police guard flooded districts. A missing Chicago Burlington and Quincy train rowed toward Kansas City with rescuers using skiffs. Topeka reports Kaw river falling and talks of a special session if aid fails.
A. C. Miner and wife hosted the wedding of Miss Emma Miner and William Claxton Evans at 1 PM. Rev W T Allan officiated at the Calvary Episcopal altar before a small family gathering. postnuptial travel plans were postponed due to floods west of here.
Topeka Kansas faces a dire flood with 48 known dead as the river falls five feet and aid is requested. Governor Bailey issues a call for help, deputy sheriffs guard against looting, and armed teams protect North Topeka property. Crops are ruined and damages may reach two million dollars as residents seek safety on higher ground. Boats ferry inhabitants from Menoken as the river remains about a mile wide.
Crowds of about 200 shelter in the Davis elevator amid floods. Chief of Police Goff directs a makeshift relief group with a chief of commissary as trail boats deliver food. Congressman Charles Curtis returns to check his flooded North Topeka home, river depth near 14 feet, falling 36 inches from peak.
The Mississippi River rose to 562 feet this morning in St Louis and stands two feet above the danger line. Authorities expect another two foot rise. In North St Louis water reached Broadway, three blocks from the levee.
Missoula Montana June 3 reports melting snows in the Coeur d'Alene mountains swelling streams and endangering the Northern Pacific railroad tracks near Hope as rivers surge through the area.
A live trolley wire at Main and Ohio streets fell about 2 PM and fatally struck Wade Wilfong's horses near the Sedalia Candy Co building. One horse toppled, the other fell soon after. Frank Grote of Brandt and Grote Grocery cut the wire with a hatchet as the power house shut off current. The injured horse had a bad leg gash. Wade Wilfong was badly frightened.
President Roosevelt arrived in Freeport to visit the church where Lincoln and Douglass debated and to dedicate a granite boulder with a bronze tablet. He praised Lincoln as a singular, devoted republic leader, second only to the republic's founder in history.
Manager Harrison telegraphed Secretary Codding that he and the Goldbugs are safe but delayed by the flood. They remain at Leavenworth and it is likely they will stay for several days.
Henry LaDuke was fined 50 for carrying concealed weapons by Judge Rogers and must pay 40 more with costs remaining. Ernst Gash received a five day jail sentence for carrying concealed weapons from Judge Berry.
Flying Eagle, a packet steamer, struck Hannibal bridge and sank at Hannibal Missouri. Sixteen people aboard are reported drowned, with rescue efforts underway and authorities investigating the cause of the disaster.
Floto's Circus and Wild West shows arrived from Kansas City this morning en route to Omaha but flood conditions forced cancellation of several performances.
The Ladies' Aid society of the German Evangelical church meets tomorrow at 3 PM in the Sunday school hall. All members urged to attend and invite new participants.
In police court this morning Dollie Whitsel was fined five dollars for drunkenness. Dr Brown also paid a five dollar fine for the same offense and Elza Craig incurred a five dollar penalty for keeping late hours.
The Dioscen Missionary Society holds an important meeting tonight at Calvary Church. All members are urged to attend as officers will be elected and committees appointed.
Secretary E. E. Codding received a telegram from Pitcher Lawson noting he would arrive tomorrow and that he was incapacitated by a wreck. The message came from Finley, Ohio.
Fayal Axores June 3. Shamrock Third arrived here today and Shamrock First is expected tomorrow. All on board are well.
Equity lodge A O U W heard four applicants at its meeting last night Elmer Murray Sam Hodges Walter Shields and Joe Paradis requested acceptance into the order.
