The great drought threatens widespread crop failure across Missouri and neighboring states. Farmers rush corn, feed shipments rise, hay could hit twenty dollars a ton, and insurers deny crop policies. Fires and water shortages escalate. The Sells circus cites drought as a reason to skip Topeka winter quarters, planning changes to cut costs.
Report notes absence of humidity driving grain markets. Kansas farmers buy wheat to feed hogs and seek to swap wheat for corn, showing opportunistic activity in the grain trade. Country speculators also buying freely of corn.
Christian ministers and laymen telegraphed Governor Dockery asking for a proclamation for a day of fasting and prayer to end the drought. Dr J J Porter refused to sign, saying scriptures do not warrant praying for rain as water scarcity and crop loss worsen. The temperature hit 110 with no rain in sight.
The Sedalia baseball club outlines a Missouri and Kansas tour starting July 28 with games against Harrisonville Butler Nevada Fort Scott Iola Erie Parsons Joplin Webb City Windsor and Jefferson City plus potential matches with Moberly and the Kansas City Blues. A big Jefferson City excursion is planned and players include O’Connell catching and O Donovan stepping to the plate. The team anticipates strong crowds for weekend games and notes professional signings by Jefferson City and the St Louis Diehls.
In Ibany Missouri three Curry children found dynamite in a cellar mistaken for putty. The dynamite fed to their pet frog exploded when a tool chest toppled, killing the youngest child and injuring another child and Mrs McCurry. The house suffered severe damage.
Dow Drug Co. offers fresh shipment of limes direct from Mexico. Suitable for hot weather drinks and fountain service, selling at 30 cents a dozen.
Farmers in Labette County Kansas fear drought next year and start irrigation. Landowners near Labette Creek build ditches and hire contractors to supply irrigation to farms including distant plots. Ditches will be used even if dry weather returns to boost strawberry yields and overall production.
Ex Alderman Clemens Honkomp in the suburbs hatched thirteen eggs and now has a bizarre bird with long legs and few feathers. Neighbors visit daily, guessing what the strange fowl may be, while the owner frets about his quiet home becoming a tourist sight.
Former Missouri governor candidate William J. Stone urged prayer for rain at Kansas City saying he would issue a rain proclamation if governor. A Sweet Springs union prayer meeting of Baptist Christian Methodist and Presbyterian churches unanimously resolved to petition Governor Dockery to appoint a statewide rain day.
Sedalia will bring three of the nation’s best pitchers Gilpatrick Coleman and Edwards to the Jefferson City games next Saturday and Sunday. Coleman will start Saturday Gilpatrick Sunday Edwards will back up if needed. A $1 excursion train leaves Sedalia at 9 30 a m stops at Tipton and California with the Second Regiment band aboard.
Luther Sparks and A. S. Sampson of Morgan county travel to Sedalia with six fine horses they plan to sell. Sampson, a dealer, previously sold Capt. E. W. Stevens a fine pair of French coach horses later sold to a St. Louis liveryman.
T L Price reports a 55 acre field yielding 142 bushels, about 25 9 11 per acre, in Pettis county. The quality is high and estimated total over 1500 bushels, prompting questions if anyone can beat it, per Sweet Springs Herald.
Local ad proclaims Dr Ford’s Headache Capsules cure any headache in 20 minutes priced at 10 cents. W E Bard Drug Co advertises the medicine amid a bustling early 20th century pharmacy scene.
James E. Pennewell of Kansas City and Miss Lydia Williams of Smithton married in Kansas City on Thursday.
The thirty seventh annual Missouri State Dental Association session in Sedalia concluded this morning after days of clinics and papers. Dr H H Sullivan spoke on Amalgam abuse and Dr J F McGraw presented on Superenal Extracts. Dr B L Thorpe of St. Louis was installed as president. an executive committee was named and a future meeting eyed for May due to heat.
At the Thursday session Dr. Burton L. Thorpe of St. Louis was chosen president with a slate of officers including S C A Rubey of Clinton as first vice president and J H Kennedy of St. Louis as cor responding secretary. Committees were appointed for Ethics Censors Publication and World’s Fair and International Dental Congress. The next meeting will be in Jefferson City Mo. Dr. Thorpe has served as correspond ing secretary for four years and is among the association’s youngest members. Read Jno N Taylor's piano ad on page 8.
