The slander case of Charles McCormick and W F Abbott was called in Judge Burr's court on the charge of injuring Alma Settles by remarks about her chastity. Attorney Wheeler requested a change of venue, which was granted, sending the case to Camp Branch.
City finance committee reports six months ending December 31 1897 receipts 59866 13 disbursements 36866 78 and bonded debt 20500. Recommends increasing the city collector salary to 1000 annually, tightening sidewalk safety enforcement, inspecting officer accounts, and using a workhouse to liquidate fines with limestone quarry plans and jail work.
The council discusses telephone franchise issues with Missouri and Kansas Telephone Co and the impact on rates. Officials note the current firm has no franchise and pays nothing to the city. The so called millionaire tramp James E. Berry died at the New Richmond hotel in Paducah Kentucky from a broken leg rheumatism and alcoholism. He was 57 and had roamed the country for 30 years claiming a million dollar inheritance yet lived penniless. Berry married Sadie Miller on June 2 at Mount Vernon Illinois and entertained tramps with a champagne dinner before his decline.
The proposer argues the officeholder could exercise charter powers to cut criminal costs and provide ample macadam and rock for street crossings at a nominal city expense. The proposal references page 31 section 48 and requests taxpayer approval.

A noon explosion on the Colorado Lease half a mile southwest of Joplin destroyed a Miller brothers tent with 90 sticks of dynamite. Glass shattered for miles. a $50 overcoat was hurled aside. Only a broken wash bowl remained 100 yards away. Nearby ads promote Sedalia livery services and dressmaking at local addresses.

Frank Gibbons of the Western Union telegraph office reported seeing a suspicious man running west along the Missouri Pacific right of way near the city when en route to church Sunday evening. He believes the man was Ford, the overcoat thief, after police were alerted by a jail incident involving Wm. Ford.

Muscogee Coal and Railroad railroad bill passes Senate. Matthews resolution on silver dollars to be reported favorably.

A 77 year old Nodaway County resident remains alive. a Miss Mary Slover dies in Independence. a memorial window for Pendleton Brooke is placed in St Paul’s Clinton.

Peter Trudell convicted of vagrancy in Judge Bosserman's court and sentenced to 30 days in jail. John Henry Summers, called the old reliable, was fined 10 dollars for drunkenness and a stay to leave the city. Henry Jones was fined 5 dollars for drunkenness.
