The military court of inquiry concludes Oscar J. Booz died from tuberculosis and that hazing was not the cause. It does find hazing occurred at the academy but not at brutal Civil War levels. The panel recommends no further prosecutions due to statutes of limitations and testimony issues and urges strong steps to stamp out hazing.
Governor Dockery, passing Sedalia en route to Jefferson City, says his inaugural address will be brief and to the point and may be read in Jefferson City or at home. He jokes about his opening campaign speech and the need to keep the message concise.
The senate reported to the house that Ruby Costello Bradley and Smith were appointed to a committee to confer with a similar committee appointed by the house regarding the operas produced at Wood's theatre this week for the inauguration of Governor-elect Dockery.
A Nation stirred by the death of Oscar L Booz of Bristol Pa once a West Point cadet amid hazing allegations. Col Mills and a military commission led by Maj Gen Brooke investigated the charges. Congress formed a committee to aid in the inquiry. The Sentinel notes the commission report in today’s pages.
Wm. Starkley, a mill worker at Harter's mill, grabbed in a belt at 7 o clock this morning sustaining a severely torn and bruised thumb. Dr. E. C. Evans attended and dressed the injury. An opinion from Attorney General Crow to Governor Stephens about the railroad commission office is noted. There will be the usual weekly service and address at Calvary church tonight with missionary features including talks on China.
Superintendent Hammer of the Se dalia railway company said the cars would likely run again tomorrow as repairs on the break are expected to be finished. The vacancy at stoner is ready to be filled and a railroad commissioner appointment by Governor Stephens is anticipated. Stephens has not confirmed any plan and prefers to consult Governor-elect Dockery before acting.
Joe Moore a 61 year old Black man died at 4 o clock this morning at his home on North Ohio street from Brights disease. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon.
Thomas Bales a farmer had charges of disturbing the peace dismissed by Judge Kinsey. Miss Stella Ames of Sedalia visited Otterville. Mrs. J Newman was badly hurt by a fall from a door step. Various local residents visited relatives here last week. Rev Rose closed a two week Baptist revival at Rockland with seven conversions. A sale of Poland China hogs will be held in February. Catherine Eberhardt aged 65 died near the city. Elder Hill’s horse escaped during a church service causing a buggy damage. Monireau county gained a senate chaplain Boude. Mrs Prentiss visited Sedalia last week.
George Black sold his 158 acre Saline County farm near Mt. Leonard to A Ransberger for 48 dollars per acre. An escape attempt by Wm Stephens and George Cross aimed to wreck the westbound C and A train, injuring no one. Lydia Wright, daughter of Robert Wright, married Jule Deal on January 1 near Mt. Leonard. Mrs. Jacob Weis died near Marshall aged 49. Mary Bowers of Sedalia attended the Mistletoe dance on New Year’s Eve.
A chimney at Henry Franklin's residence at 410 West Seventh became obstructed this morning and smoke filled the house. An alarm was rung at 8:45 a.m. and the fire department soon had the situation under control.
