David Lay, a Johnson County farmer known as Judge Lay, shot Dr. O P Kernodle at Kernodle’s Knobnoster home after Lay and his wife visited at 7 PM. Kernodle returned fire, wounding Lay above the heart. Lay’s condition was mortal but he remained alive into the afternoon. The incident arose from an alleged insult to Mrs Lay. no arrest had been made by press time.
Ensign Bernard younger brother of a Salvation Army member who died hunting near Warrensburg arrives next Saturday to lead meetings Saturday and Sunday. Bernard, connected with Lexington work, follows Major and Mrs Miles whose meetings Monday and Tuesday drew large, keen crowds. Tuesday’s First M. E. church session proved especially engaging.
Warden Starke of the Missouri penitentiary exposed a slick scheme by a burglar to escape punishment at multiple penitentiaries. Marshal Chiles of Kansas aided in the tip. The report also advertises cheap coal from Whipple and coal dealers with yard and office locations.
City brought 18 prisoners to the penitentiary including two burglars named J Johnson and Roy Griffith. Griffith posed as Johnson and vice versa. wardens identified the ruse from rogues gallery photos and confirmed true identities. Johnson has faced three penitentiaries in seven months and the list of prisoners includes many names with varied sentences.
Missouri officials appointed by Governor Stephens met at the Southern Hotel to organize the state’s Omaha Exposition delegation. John W. Baldwin of Sedalia was named to the executive committee as plans for a Missouri building and creditable exhibit were laid out.
Sedalia mourns D. J. Edwards a prominent young businessman who died at his Osage street home at 3 this morning after a four day illness. Despite medical care and consultations his condition worsened and he passed away. He was known for his long-standing ties to the community and is remembered by a wide circle of friends.
In Judge Klein's division a jury awarded Sedalia residents $401.85 against Hugh J. Brady. A motion to set aside the verdict will be filed, and if denied an appeal to the St. Louis Court of Appeals is planned.
L. F. Strong and his family left Georgetown last September for Batavia New York hoping to settle there permanently. Dissatisfied they came back this week to Lamonte and will move again to Pettis. The Epworth Literary Society of the First M E church hosts its regular monthly meeting at the church tomorrow evening with an excellent programme.
The Mackay Comic Opera company wrapped a successful three-night run at Wood’s Opera House ending last evening with a lively performance of Chimes of Normandy. A highlight featured Chas L. Taylor, noted jeweler, in the role of Gaspard whose aged miser portrayal drew strong acclaim from the audience.
Ladies admitted free at the opera house next Monday for a three night run of The Smugglers with new plays and special effects. Tickets 10 20 and 30 cents. free for ladies with a paid 30 cent seat. Seats on sale now. Also notices on remedies and local services appear in this column.
The Mackays drew strong applause with a curtain call after a scene, signaling audience approval. A successful Sedalia engagement followed, and they would be warmly welcomed back at any future visit.

Peter Scotten and Misses Goldie and Viola Snider visit from nearby towns. John Bush heads to Warrensburg to resume Normal studies. Play Ten Nights in the Bar Room by local talent praised at Grothers hall. Mrs Geo A Friend and Miss Ora Hester win prizes at Demorest silver medal contest. Major Miles and Mrs. Miles were feted at a Tuesday afternoon reception hosted by Mesdames Smith and Cotton. The event drew many Christian reform leaders and featured Major Miles address and musical selections. Beyond this, reports recall two Kansas City deaths tied to a physician’s attentions to a wife, involving Fred Jackson and Dr. L A Berger, with graves at Elmwood Cemetery noted nearby.
The Sentinel reports two men possibly thieves headed toward Sedalia from Smithton after two horses were stolen. An elderly man from Versailles arrived in Sedalia last evening claiming one horse was taken yesterday and later found abandoned in Smithton. No trace has been located since the men left Smithton.
The Joplin Globe reports Col. Wm Coffee ordered mustering out of the Joplin band and mustering in of Sedalia band as the Second regiment's new band. The Sedalia group, 25 members strong, with a $1,400 treasury, has long sought the post after concerns over the Joplin ensemble's duties since Director Hughes departed.
