A third attempt in three weeks to wreck a Michigan Central passenger train succeeded partly when a switch was turned without changing the light, sending a heavily laden train into freight cars on a siding at thirty miles per hour. Many were slightly injured. Officials suspect an insane foe.
The Missouri state board of agriculture decided to hold the 1904 state fair from August 15 to 20. Officers elected include President William Potts of Mexico, Vice President John Hill of Chillicothe, Secretary John R. Rippey of Lancaster. The board planned swift rebuilding of stock barns destroyed by fire to accommodate the large stock exhibit.
Capt. T. C. Holland returns from St Louis where the A O U W board of state officers decided to cut state deputies from eight to two The supreme lodge officers will visit parts of the state to explain new plans formulated at the meeting
Joplin, Missouri reports a gang of despera te crooks operating nightly with safe cracking and hold ups. They spread from Joplin to Carthage and Galena as Sheriff Rains of Cherokee County is held up at Baxter Springs, and merchant I E Shafer is robbed of 50 dollars in Galena.
Robbers blew the Citizens bank safe in Quimby Iowa last night and escaped with three thousand dollars. They stole a team and left no clue to identify them.
Admiral Schley visiting Chicago for a Scottish Rite Masonic degrees demonstration was warmly received during a Change Day reception. He traveled with a strong reception from the public as he moved through the city.
Possees across the region pursue fourteen desperadoes who escaped Tombstone jail last night by boring a hole in the wall. Five principal fugitives travel together on horses lent by confederates and are heavily armed. The five are the ringleaders. others are minor criminals. A fight is expected if caught. The jailbreak was masterminded by the group.
The state department backs Consul Davis after he was assaulted at Alexandretta. It seeks apologies and reparation from Turkey. Turkish officials, worried by the affair, offer Attarian free passage but he demands cash indemnity. Further details await Minister Leischman.
Helena Mont December 16 Governor Toole grants an unconditional pardon to Camile Peres who is serving five years for assaulting Adrienne Baque a 15 year old French girl convicted at Great Falls two years ago. The girl later admitted in a letter to the governor that she gave perjured testimony claiming she would marry and hoped to right a wrong before that event.
Fort Scott Kansas December 16 two Frisco freight trains collided at Anna twelve miles south of Fort Scott. Brakeman M Heritage was killed and two others H J Kramer and H E Woolford were injured. The wreck on a bridge caught fire and Heritage was burned alive. All men resided in Fort Scott.

Fulton Missouri December 16 The bribery case against Ed Butler the wealthy politician in the St Louis stirring scandal opened with Judge Waller recusing himself due to prior ties as Butler's lawyer and Judge Hough presiding The case now targets February 1 next year with Butler’s motion to quash the indictment and a demurrer rejected by the court
In Jersey City Laura M. Cox wed John H. Hopken at the bedside of her dying father John Cox of 639 Bergen avenue. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. William P. Bush of St. Pauls Episcopal church as the father lay gravely ill with little hope of recovery.
Wheeling officials assure there will be no lynching after an assault on Sister Alma of St. John's asylum. Mayor A. T. Sweeney says the three accused negroes are jailed under guard in the city prison and prepared for emergencies. Two suspects are held on $50,000 bonds each as investigators proceed. Sister Alma, now nervously improved, will identify her attackers when able, with hopes one suspect confesses.
The Maccabees of Crescent Tent No 4 held a pleasant social session after last night's meeting. Refreshments were served and cigars enjoyed.
George Bird a Black resident died at his Lincolnville home last night. Funeral services are planned for Thursday.
Mrs. William Burtram, a young wife, shot Miss Johnson at the door of her Benton home in the evening. Johnson died on the doorstep. Burtram is jailed and ill. The shooting followed alleged romantic entanglements with William Burtram, son of W. R. Burtram, jailed for murder.
The forecast calls for fair conditions tonight and Thursday with colder temperatures tonight. Expect a drop in temperatures as the night progresses and gradual warming into Thursday.
