Court records reveal Monk Gibson stands trial amid allegations of widespread murder. Prosecutors present a case linking Gibson to multiple killings across the region, with defense arguing insufficiency of evidence and motive.
Out of 125 men examined only eight jurors were secured to try negro accused of.
Edna Texas December report describes Monk Gibson a 17 year old negro on trial for the Conditt family killings. Venire panel of 125 yields eight jurors. A juror cites race as a barrier to a fair trial. Court room crowded. Gibson smiles and chews gum, showing no fear.
In police court this morning Earl Hoffman and Granville Orrison faced a dispute over a girl from Sunday night. Hoffman’s case was continued generally while Orrison’s was dismissed. Judge Truxel scolded Hoffman for the incident and for a false hold-up story, and warned Orrison against using a knife again, urging fists for self defense. The judge attempted to restore peace with a handshake, but Hoffman and Orrison did not reconcile.
Mrs Maggie C Helsley died at 319 West Tenth Street this morning at 6 oclock after long illness and pneumonia. She leaves husband and three children Gertrude of Kansas City Frank and Ira of this city. A religious service will be held at home tomorrow at 8 and the body sent to Ionia Benton County for burial at 9 10 Rev J M Rudy of the First Christian church will conduct.
A Christian church will conduct services at the home and accompany the family to Ionia where a funeral discourse will be preached in the Christian church there.
War department orders relieve General Miner retired from further service with the Ohio militia. Miner had been entangled in the Taggart scandal and accused by Captain Taggart of actions unbecoming an officer and a gentleman.
Governor Folk appoints Hon. C. E. Yeater to the university board of visitors. The board will conduct annual inspections and recommend improvements as needed.
Representatives from various religious groups meet in New York to discuss recommendations for the interstate divorce commission set to convene in Washington in February. The commission will include delegates appointed by state governors.
Mr. Robert J. Williams of St. Louis and Emmaline Noye Easton daughter of A R Easton of this city were married at Rev 5.8. Martins residence Tuesday December 12 at 4 p m in the bride's father and brother Johnson Easton's presence. They secured a license, were wed at the parsonage, and left on the 5 p m train for St. Louis to begin their life together.
A report from Nevada recounts Jesse Crew, once committed to the asylum after assaulting Conductor J. H. Lefferty, causing a dining hall riot by beating three inmates and striking an attendant with a plate. Crew, subdued and bound, is described by officers as exceptionally vicious.
Colonel William H. Phelps of Carthage Mo. confirms he did not take a fee for securing a Mutual Life Insurance license in Missouri as claimed by NY official Eldredge. He admits receiving 3500 dollars from Mutual Life for other legal services rendered for the company.
Colonel Phelps denies knowing the witness who described him making a pill to help Mutual Reserve Life Insurance obtain a Missouri license. He says he did not appear for the company to secure a license and the bill was not for such services. He refuses to specify the service tied to the $3500 charge as it is not apropos.
The South Texas District Medical Association gathered in Beaumont on December 13 with hundreds of physicians from across the state. They planned to endorse Dr. George R. Tabor, Texas health officer, for his stringent quarantine measures that prevented yellow fever spread, despite criticism from some Southern papers.

John H. Otten of Richfountain Osage county Missouri is jailed in Jefferson City on a charge of forging a $25 Sedalia post office money order. Deputy U S Marshal McKenna arrested him and Commissioner H C Geisberg held him to the federal grand jury after he allegedly cashed a misaddressed money order at the Sedalia general delivery window.
The quartermaster general sanctioned key contract work at Fort Totten New York including repairs to the building used by electrician sergeants of the School of Submarine Defense. Artillery officers push for liberal congressional funding this session while Congress signals limited support and restraint on Fort Totten expansion.
A marriage license was issued today to Horace G. Weddle of Sedalia and Agnes Carson of Brownington Mo.

Brown, a lumber businessman, heads Lincoln as a Democrat in a Republican city.

The governor named John M. Gearin as United States senator to succeed the late Senator Mitchell. Gearin becomes the first Democratic senator from Oregon since 1886.
Brooklyn and Boston report civil service exams today seeking eligibles for topographic draughtsman and for an appraiser’s department China ware glassware position. Brooklyn exam tests drawing lettering math and projection subjects over two ten hour days. Boston salary is 1200 dollars with few applicants, open to U S citizens over twenty.
Frederick Power actor and Bush Temple director underwent a historic operation for tongue cancer in Chicago. Dr. Nicholas Senn led the surgery which required splitting the lower jaw. Power expressed farewell words to his mother as anesthesia took effect, and doctors warned his voice would be lost though lip movements might allow limited communication.
Chicago December 13 report says John Alexander Dowie founder of Zion City is gravely ill and may never resume his work despite officials from the Christian Catholic church denying the illness. Dowie has not left his residence for weeks.

The large Dewey floating dry dock at Solomon's Island is prepared for its voyage to Manila. J D Wood of Norfolk will command the trip earning 250 dollars monthly and living aboard during the 1400 mile voyage. Walter Broyles was treated to a pleasant surprise party by about twenty young friends at his home on Eighteenth and Summit streets. James Winebrenner, a thrifty farmer turned businessman, was struck by east bound passenger train No. 2 at the railroad crossing near the depot in Clarksburg. He died instantly from a broken neck and leg after being hurled about twenty feet. He had moved to Clarksburg recently and led active local business interests.
