Poor weather kept crowds away as trains ran over capacity and many could not reach Sedalia. Over 20,000 attended Thursday despite rain, with rail and streetcar service stretched. Organizers urged later dates, longer run and better transportation funded by legislature.
Raids highlighted the agricultural department with many firsts and seconds awarded across crops and seeds. Winners include G H Sly Canton and L H Archias Sedalia for multiple grains and legumes, plus Canadian government exhibits noted in several standings.
In the 2:30 trot for 1000 dollars eight starters ran two heats. Harry Johnson won the first heat with Uncle William second and Miss Laura T third. second heat saw Harry Johnson first and Candy second. Blondie Redwood led in the third and fourth heats, time 2:09 1/4 to win. A four-entry running race for a quarter mile saw Bagdad prevail in 1:15 3/4 on a mile track.
Crowd fans pack the Elks Vaudeville to see stars from the Columbia Theatre. Performers Woods and Adams the Three Marvelous Merrills J Howard Maxwell Sisters Colville and McBride and Bonnie Maie draw strong applause. Acts head to St Louis Chicago and New York venues this week.
At the fair grounds emergency hospital Thursday sixteen cases were treated, mostly fainting women or bowel troubles. Among visitors were Senator Rubey of Macon Senator E D Martin of Marshall and Senator Bradley of Warrensburg. J R Quarles formerly in stationery here but now in Kansas City had his pockets picked at the gate, losing a card case containing a dollar a $66 50 check and papers.
The rector requests we state he regrets a private conversation caused an article in the Democrat. He says the piece would have been corrected but the Democrat went to press earlier than expected.
The rector Dr Allan says he bears no blame for prior remarks, feels better than a year ago, and will continue at Calvary church after weighing medical advice. He plans to spend the rest of his vacation at Excelsior Springs and is seeking a house near the church for the coming year.
Sam Kemp, a pickpocket, was arrested at the fair grounds yesterday. He appeared before Judge Kinsey today and was sentenced to one day in jail, held until tomorrow, and then to be sent to Kansas City due to insufficient evidence.
The musical comedy Pickings From Puck comes to town with breezy numbers and the Ping Pong dance set to delight audiences. Star Willard Simms entertains with a versatile comic act while Katherine Linvard wows with beauty and talent, promising a refined scenic and stage presentation.
Lamonte visitors named from Nellie Carter to Walter Gregory attended the fair. Pettis county claimed the $40 prize for best county fruit exhibit, Laclede placed second, and the major Pettis display came from the Shepard Thomson Lowrey collections. Over 20 000 people were on the grounds by 2 pm Thursday.
In Kindrican Field on Saturday August 23 a picture appeared of General DeWet, the prized bird dog owned by C. B. Rodes of the city. The puppy is a half brother to Dee Hicks once owned by Dr. E. F. Yancey.
