A circus wagons wreck in Michigan this morning results in nineteen deaths and nineteen injuries. Emergency crews rushed to the scene as investigators began work. The Vance Brothers circus tour had just left a town when the fatal accident occurred.
Durand Michigan August 7 Wallace Brothers circus wrecked on Grand Trunk Railway when second section could not stop air brakes failed. Nineteen killed or injured many animals killed or maimed, including one elephant and two camels. Trains 35 cars total. aid and temporary hospital set up at Richelieu Hotel.
The jury for Caleb Powers in the Goebel assassination case is seated in Georgetown Kentucky. Eleven Democrats and one Republican comprise the panel. Powers pleads not guilty as the defense files numerous motions and the prosecution begins its address.
Kansas City August 7 The Kaw river rises five feet and men race to save ten temporary pile bridges from driftwood. The James street bridge opened at daylight then nearly swept away as it swung in the current. The Sentinel offers 25 cent room rental ads for State Fair subscribers to publish housing needs in its columns.
Jefferson City authorities anticipate the grand jury to issue indictments tomorrow amid ongoing investigations. Court observers say the panel has met repeatedly this week, and prosecutors aim to broaden charges in several cases.
Jefferson City Aug 7. Grand jury expected to indict for perjury and to subpoena every member of the last legislature. Names named include a Kansas City politician and a trust representative. Roach Duncan Flanagan testified. roster of members may be demanded. money in the Christian Scientist bill under scrutiny.
In the Roosevelt home parlor Baron Speer received the Emperor's letter recalling former Ambassador Von Holleben and appointing Von Sternberg Germany's ambassador extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to the United States.
London reports say Chinese Boxer violence could resume. rumors claim multiple Russian officials have been murdered in Manchuria though details remain scarce as authorities rate the Far East situation too delicate for public reprisals.
The Pope met Cardinal Gibbons in private audience in Rome, asking about American church affairs and charging Gibbons to convey the apostolic benediction to American Catholics. He later presented Monsignor O Connell and Father Grannon of the Catholic University to his holiness, along with his secretary Father Carvan.
After leaving the Vatican Cardinal Gibbons was seized by illness and moved to his home where his physician advised him to depart Rome to escape the heat. He intends to stay to assist at the coronation of Pius X next Sunday.
Carrie Nation told a reporter in Scranton on August 7 that she will go crazy if people hear she is marrying again. She said she is ashamed of her former marriage to David Nation and that he disgraced her before he left and obtained a divorce.
Patrick Fow, in Philadelphia, drank what he believed was beer but read a newspaper claim he consumed a chemical mix including lime sulphites and acids. He fainted and fell into a sewer at Fifty sixth street and Girard avenue, then was taken to Presbyterian hospital with knee and facial injuries.
A plaintiff files suit against a railroad seeking twenty thousand dollars in damages claiming blacklisting prevented gainful employment. The complaint argues the railroad unlawfully barred the man from work and seeks redress for lost wages and damages.
Louisville, Aug 7. Robert Polley sues the Louisville and Nashville railroad for 20000 dollars claiming his name was placed with the word striker on the blacklist preventing employment with any railroad. The suit draws attention in railroad circles and its outcome will be watched.
The first child in the country named after the new Pope is the son of Mr and Mrs Arthur S Picker ing of James street Bloomfield New Jersey. Born on the pope’s election day the boy will be christened in the Protestant Episcopal church of which the father is a communicant.
James Ryan and Pete Newman were fined five dollars each in police court this morning for drunkenness. Newman appeared before Magistrate Truxel as usual and paid the assessed fine.

The Lincoln correspondent seeks Mrs Daniel Baer who lived 31% miles from Sedalia. The Moberly correspondent seeks Albert Dunbar who was in Sedalia about three months ago.
Tonight and Saturday expect generally fair skies with a warming trend on Saturday. South portion may see a bit more sun and higher temperatures as a coastal breeze shifts.
Charles J. Davis, once paroled from the Illinois state reformatory at Pontiac after fourteen months for forging pay checks on the Chicago and Northwestern railroad, surrendered to authorities in New York Aug 7 claiming no ability to find work as a stonecutter due to nonmembership in the union. He was serving an indeterminate term of one to four years and said he had no hope of honest living.
