Colton Murder Mystery Haunts Bloomington After Six Years

Bloomington Illinois April 25 many residents ask if Annie Colton has finally been found. She has been sought nationwide for six years with corpses clues and false leads. A police officer traveled to St Louis to pursue the story and rumors of her arrest there circulate. The Colton case began after the murder of Michael Colton in 1897 with three fatal hatchet and gunshot wounds. A hatchet and bloodstains were found in the kitchen and a prisoner’s tail of the suspect’s movements traced to Peoria and St Louis. The case remains unresolved with no clear motive or suspect.

Father and Son Dead After Mexican Sojourn

Sedalia reports the deaths of John Stanford, a former Hill's Business College student, and his father who had sought health in Texas. The father died about two weeks prior, the son died soon after in Mexico. The mother returned to her home southwest of the city. Both bodies were buried.

Explosion at North Side Oil plant leaves dozens missing

Minneapolis April 23 report says a tank explosion at the North Side Oil plant started a blaze that sent flames through nearby buildings. Seven to fifteen killed. nine dead and nine fatally injured by 2:30 p m. Nine others still missing. Ambulances ferried twenty five injured to hospitals as firemen struggle to subdue the fire.

Captain Apfeld and crew members of the American liner Friesland descended through dense smoke to extinguish a hold fire three days out from Philadelphia. The inflammable cargo of cotton tallow paraffin and resin was saved. Passengers adopted resolutions of thanks.

Leper Soldier in Philippines Slated for Pay Receipt Plan

A leper artillery enlisted man in the Philippines is before the War Department and referred to the judge advocate general to decide how he will receipt for his pay. Isolated in South Carolina, pay officers refuse to have him sign the rolls, so a plan will allow payment via a power of attorney executed with medical staff present.

New York April 23 Colonel D J Rickey originator of the world famous Gin Rickey died in his residence after a brief illness. He was a pioneer in American bartending and his beverage became a national icon. His death closes a notable chapter in cocktail history.

King Edward VI Arrives in Naples Under Guarded Reception

King Edward landed in Naples aboard the royal yacht and was greeted by 101 guns from the Italian squadron. A crowd of about three hundred thousand gathered along the shore to witness his visit. the king asked that no naval review be held and his wish was granted.
