William G. Shepherd reports Ostend, Belgium, living in a new fear as Zeppelins, bombing from the sky, loom over the darkened city. Soldiers patrol, lights are out, and residents pray as British battleships stand offshore.
American correspondent Harry Payne Burton reports witnessing the great battle near Paris as German forces clash with French and British along a scorching frontline. He describes ruined farms, burning wheat, falling soldiers, and close infantry combat as the fight unfolds from the road toward Meaux and the gates of Paris.
The Star urges voters to oppose a proposed road purchase in Rainier Valley, calling the terms exorbitant and likening the price to a robber’s tribute. It condemns any court allowing such a hold-up and pushes for accountability in the next legislature.
