Dispatches claimed Battling Nelson died after a Labor Day fight with Joe Gane in Goldfield. A direct wire later said Nelson is seriously injured but not dead, and trading on the Block exchange paused briefly to note the false report. The Adams embex case hearing was postponed to September 14.
James N. Gillette won the Republican state convention vote for governor on the first ballot at Santa Cruz California receiving 519 and Pardee 234 with a total 825. Gillette, a California First District congressman seeking renomination, faces organized labor opposition over his stance against certain union-backed laws. The platform supports Japanese exclusion and tax measures, plus citrus and infrastructure provisions.

The sisters of Good Shepherd will lay the cornerstone of the new building on Pacific Avenue and Sunnyside next Sunday at 4 o'clock. The ceremony will be led by Right Rev Edward J Odea with numerous reverends from Tacoma and nearby towns assisting.
Hobart mill worker White sustained multiple deep lacerations to the left hand after belt slippage caused his hand to strike the saw teeth while adjusting the belt. The incident occurred yesterday and the head sawyer was present at the scene.

Santa Fe conductor F M Carter and waitress Priscella Bastian died in a depot blaze that destroyed the Needles Santa Fe depot early this morning. The surrounding warehouse and mail area were heavily damaged.
A Spokane saloonkeeper painted a large sign over the rocks at the north side of Spokane Falls above the Monroe street bridge. The sign reads Selle Whisky, drawing attention to the falls during low water when the area is barren and previously overlooked by visitors.

Capt. Smith brother of Smith Bros. cough drops was arrested for vagrancy and improper language in Everett. A judge found he is not insane, attributing his odd utterances to a throat bullet wound and noting he works for the U S government and owns substantial means.

Mike Meyers was arrested yesterday for grand larceny over a watch and chain valued at fifty dollars taken from Frank Bonce. This morning Judge Davia released Meyers on a fifteen hundred dollar bond.
Tom Evans a Pennsylvania coal miner was fined $15 by Judge Gordon for becoming intoxicated on arrival in the city and attempting to whip everyone he met. The incident occurred this morning as he created a disturbance at the downtown area.
