On a calm harbor morning a three masted schooner Hunter swung at anchor opposite the White Star dock as waterfront spectators watched. The decks were crowded with men moving restlessly, voicing their objections to meals.
Steamer Diriae arrived from Lyon this morning with many passengers and about 900000 dollars in gold dust. John Sweeney of Brooklyn seeks police help to locate his son Thomas who left home and may head to San Francisco after taking money from the store. A complaint over assault and battery is sworn against EF. Francie, with a hearing set for Tuesday. Also, John Barrett departs for Seattle invited by the chamber of commerce for a talk on American interests in the Pacific. Labor Day events, local union meetings, a bunco case, and various legal updates fill the city news.
Rennes dispatch reports Hartman the artillery expert and other witnesses challenging the authorship of the bordereau. Deloye questions the crude terms and timing, while Picquart and Gonse exchange doubts amid accusations and forgery claims. The court adjourns until Monday.
Dispatch from Gen Otis reports Lieut Col Byrne destroyed Argegula, bandit stronghold, on August 31 killing 21 and capturing supplies. Bandit strength stood at about 400. No serious casualties among Byrne’s party. Also noted is Maguire’s Seattle lectures on the single tax with Crosby arriving to speak.
Newport reports Miss Julia Dent Grant to wed the Russian Prince Cantacuzene around September 18 to 25. Mrs Potter Palmer plans teas luncheons and sailing parties to introduce the couple to friends while awaiting timely deliveries for the festive occasion.
Portland August 2 The failure of a prior syndicate bid to buy all cracker factories on the Pacific coast does not halt the project. New agents are in Portland pushing to complete the purchase of local plants. Companies reportedly demand higher prices than before.
