In Oregon near Eugene two bandits held up the northbound Southern Pacific Express at Ottage Grove. Railway Messenger P T Ghariee fired back with a rifle as the robbers blew open the door with dynamite. They then looted the mail car and escaped. a sheriff’s posse pursues them.
London reports say Sir Redvers Buller is removed as commander of the first army corps and Gen. French named his successor after Buller admitted at a luncheon that he advised surrender at Ladysmith. The move follows the October 10 speech and stirs talk of further war office inquiries.
Advices from Constantinople claim Prince George of Greece, high commissioner of Crete, will summon the Cretan assembly to proclaim annexation to Greece. The Porte warns such action would be casus belli for Turkey. Turkish troops are said to be concentrated on the frontier, though diplomats doubt he will persist.

The U S mail steamer Discovery leaves Sunday for Alaska calling at Juneau Sitka Valdez and Dutch Harbor on its mail route. The vessel was rebuilt after a prior damage and is described as a good boat for carrying passengers and freight.
Chief of Police Sullivan received a telegram from Des Moines Iowa asking if any peanut nickel-in-the-slot machines exist in Seattle. The purpose of the inquiry remains unknown to the chief.

On the City of Peking from the Orient Ludington Quartermaster General returns from inspecting the Philippines reporting army conditions satisfactory. Also aboard Baron Alexander Kahlbahrs, commander of Russian forces in Manchuria, en route to St Petersburg, claims complete subjugation of Manchuria and perpetual Chinese opposition end.
Examinations under U S civil service rules will be held in Beattie on Oct 20 and 80 to fill the position of assistant surgeon at Freedman's Hospital Washington D C. The salary ranges from 1000 to 1600 dollars per year.
