In Highlands New Jersey on October 17, the yacht Columbia beats Shamrock after Shamrock's topmast snaps at 11:36 AM. Both boats race in strong winds with Columbia finishing within the time limit amid cheering excursion boats and spectators.
The queen's speech urges immediate reinforcement for British forces in South Africa as Mafeking teeters under Boer attack. Officers, men, artillery, and supplies to sail within six days as clashes continue. Casualties reported include 390 Boers and 18 Brits at Mafeking with no British deaths in a nearby armored train engagement.
In Dewey rumors, McKinley supporters in New York state insist there will be no stampede from the 1900 Republican convention. A friend of McKinley says Dewey’s name at the convention would not unsettle loyalty to McKinley and delegates may still back the president if instructed.

The twelve story building would house about 560 women and target professionals such as artists teachers physicians stenographers and trained nurses with rents projected between 3 and 6 dollars weekly. A low rate restaurant is planned and the exact plan is to be determined.
