The Columbia beat the Shamrock by ten minutes in light fog off Naveline Highlands New Jersey. Columbia led from the start, extended to a mile by 1:04 pm, and finished the 15 mile windward race at 2:44 pm with the Shamrock nearly a mile behind.
Chehalis October 14. The hop crop in the county and state is estimated at 30 000 to 35 000 bales due to bad weather in July and early August. Washington faces shortages echoed in England New York and Oregon with quality high in Lewis County. No sales yet buyers on the ground sample hops while prices remain uncertain amid foreign crop overstatements and rising domestic use.
The Seattle and San Francisco railway advances at their mines in a bustling town. Housing rises rapidly with a new school and church planned next month. Five openings extend to 650 feet and 400 feet, coal bunkers stand ready, and shipping will begin January 1. Modern bunkers on the east side of the waterway will receive coal directly on grade, with cars dumped into chutes to eliminate shoveling, as General Matias Zit oversees.
Colliers to run between this date to ship 509 tons of coal daily. The mines will export to the San Francisco market which can absorb this amount and more. There are strong markets at Alaska points and Honolulu, and officials aim to extend trade to these ports.

Capt Marty Turner of the Bound steamer Code reportedly lost more than $1,000 after weeks of gambling at Clancy’s. Turner told Chief Reed of the police that the house violated no rules and lawyers are seeking return of the funds amid an ongoing dispute over the case.
L H McMutrie, foreman for Moran Bros., in charge of the steel shipbuilding department, was honored with a farewell banquet on Saturday morning as he resigned. A gold chain and charm were presented to him by his colleagues.
An order from the War Department retires Gen. Shafter as brigadier general in the regular army and continues him in command of the Department of California at San Francisco as major general of the Volunteers.
A small two story residence at S34 Twenty third avenue south burned last night about eight o'clock. Owned by a man named Davidson the home was occupied by P Kenyon a conductor on the Feacon hill and Broadway branch of the Union Trunk Line. Loss around 800 covered by insurance.
The Seattle Ministerial Association will hold a meeting at the YMCA on First Avenue tonight with elections for officers for the ensuing year.
On Monday October 23 at 4 p m the Ladies Auxiliary of the Society for Universal Religion will be formed in the Chamber of Commerce. Those interested are urged to attend.
The transport Centennial arrived from San Francisco on October 5 and many of its horses were in bad condition at port. The Gaelic also reports that the British ship Antipode, docked in Honolulu since July 3, has been labeled.
The Lakme, a seaworthy steamer on the Northern route, is several days overdue for Seattle. Charterers fear for her safety though experts thought she should have arrived by Tuesday or Wednesday. Older sailors note she has avoided trouble before and may yet appear.
The United States transport Port Stevens, sailing from Port Stephens New South Wales, is now due in Seattle. Moran Bros. Company has definitively won the fitting out award, and about five hundred men are expected to start work on the Port Stevens soon.
The barge Skookum loads at Yesler dock for the White Pass & Yukon railway while Vancouver rails, sold to a Japanese firm, are finally handled by a Seattle agent after delays. The steamship Al-Ki, Capt. Nicholson, arrives from Lynn Canal with 107 passengers and twelve thousand cases of salmon, and departs for the North tomorrow.
Cape Town reports the Schreiner ministry refused to call Cape volunteers, Imperial forces issue a call. Boers move 2,000 men with 16 guns into Natal reaching Dannhauser near Dundee while aims to isolate Dundee from Ladysmith. Fighting reportedly breaks out near Kimberly on the railway as tensions rise between Dutch and English. Cabinet meeting in London postponed to tomorrow.
San Francisco October 16 Volunteers in the Washington regiment discuss the plan to assign one of three new regiments to Washington. Gov Rogers supports the plan and will influence officials. Promotions are discussed, with Lieut Lamping resigning to allow Fleet Sergeant Rawson to advance. Presentation of a saber to Col Wholly’s regiment is announced.
Alexander Stephenson a 33 year old laborer was brought to the city from Snohomieh after his left leg was crushed beneath a moving train while intoxicated. The wheels passed over his limbs in the accident.
James Robertson, owner of the large log raft lost on the coast, left for Japan aboard an Empress liner to secure funds for his raft project. He aims to build a raft that can withstand any weather and, if negotiations succeed, plans to dispatch rafts to the Orient.
Yesterday marked the anniversary of the founding of the Congregational society in the city. Exercises from the Star were followed at both services. A reception is to be held in the church pavilion after the event.
