New Orleans Oct 16 The American Legion Oriental committee urged a united stand by former service members for Congressman Albert Johnson s Jap exclusion bill and anti alien land holding measures. The report cites rising Pacific coast Japanese penetration and criticizes the gentlemen s agreement as ineffective detailing census shifts and the influx of Japanese women via mutual arrangements and picture brides.
Funeral services were held at St. Marks church for Elizabeth Williams Champney. A longtime Seattle resident and celebrated author, she died last week at the Sorrento hotel. Born February 6 1850 in Springfield Ohio she was among the era’s oldest college graduates after earning an A B from Vassar in 1869. Her husband J Wells Champney was an artist and they lived in Boston New York and Paris before settling in Seattle. She stayed after visiting her son Frere Champney connected with the Alaska Yukon-Pacific exposition. Her works span The Hubbling Teapot Howling Wolf and Hill Trick Pony All Around a Palette Mourbon Lilies Rosemary and Rue In the Sky Garden Vaasar Girls Abroad and many Romance volumes. She led the Messiah Home for Children and belonged to Sorosis and the Society of Colonial Dames.
Voters are urged to register or update by 5 PM Tuesday at the County City building. Registration numbers are well below 1920 levels, and movers to new precincts must recheck in. Naturalized citizens must present naturalization papers.
Weary Wilkins proprietor of the Pacific bindery and Charles B Wood county purchasing agent face grand larceny charges in a county fraud trial. Indicted for defrauding the county of 1200 tied to 40 justice court docket forms. alleged payments for undelivered dockets. First witness was to be called after the noon recess.
The railroad labor board announced wage increases around 25 percent for yardmasters. For the first time yardmasters are covered by formal working conditions, with an eight hour day and pro rata overtime. Many hold seven days a week, now entitled to two days off monthly.
Miss Margaret McDonald a former University of Washington student married Harold Zirckel of Seattle. The ceremony was at the bride's parents home in Pasco. After the wedding the couple left for Oakland California to establish their home.
Joe Richards a 21 year old Pacific Car and Foundry employee at Renton was stabbed below the right ear during a strike confrontation. He lay unconscious in the street until found and rushed to Renton hospital where doctors halted the bleeding. He regained consciousness the next day and is expected to recover.
The city council license committee will not recommend action against skidway district halls south of Yesterway after a Monday meeting. Councilman Lou Cohen said his investigation found the girls more orderly in conduct and dress than in uptown halls and cabarets.
William DeGraff, a lamp-lighter for the Northern Pacific railroad, will plead self defense as his trial for first degree murder opens before Superior Judge A. W. Frater. He is accused of shooting Joe Nelson on August 23 during a quarrel over Mrs. John Colberg at 4602 10th Ave.
Eight people were injured when westbound mail train No 5 Great Northern crashed head on into an eastbound freight at Irby near Ephrata Washington. Injured include engineer Nick Oster and fireman J Henson with others from the mail clerks and crew. All were taken to a Spokane hospital for treatment.
Paul Staren, a convicted murderer, hanged himself in the Walla Walla state penitentiary death cell Saturday night after promising he would not be executed. He had shot August Bonjiorni and wounded his uncle John Bonjiorni at the Bonjiorni farm on September 21.
The supreme court ruled states may levy a special income tax for a designated aim such as funding public schools. It upheld a 1919 Massachusetts law to raise funds for higher teacher salaries, deeming school maintenance a general state purpose supported by state funds.
Mrs Sarah Beeler ex candidate for the state legislature surprised a burglar in her home at 1606 8th Ave after returning from a dance. The intruder, described as colored, took $34 from the Al-Agar lodge and fled leaving a $2 bill behind. Police recovered no further items. Other thefts included Bramer and Marx garage cash register theft totaling $70, a diamond lavaliere valued at $126 stolen from Miss S Davia, and two opal and ruby rings taken from W I Brotherton after a kitchen window was crawled through.
W. D. Patterson a 56 year old wealthy rancher near Cascade Idaho was shot and killed by D. L. Hoagland who lived on Patterson’s ranch. Sheriff Driggs kept Hoagland in Boise to avert mob action. Hoagland says the killing followed Patterson removing cattle without prior agreed shares.
Washington Vet 16 Suit challenging the Willis Campbell amendment to the Volstead act barring manufacture and sale of beer as medicine was filed with the Supreme Court today by Piel Bros former brewers.

Memphis editor G. V. Sanders of the Memphis Press stood before Federal Judge J. W. Ross on four counts of contempt of court. Cohen received eight months' imprisonment and a $1,000 fine for calling strikebreakers scabs.
Portland police say A. T. Reed 23 killed himself Sunday in despair after his sweetheart broke their engagement. He tried to shoot his sweetheart Hellen Stockhouse 18 first, but wounded her in hospital and then killed himself through the heart, Reedway police report.
Washington reports that 1000 troops of the United States army of occupation in Germany are to be returned home after talks among Secretary Weeks General Pershing and President Harding. A virtual decision was reached to withdraw the American army on the Rhine.
Rock Island Illinois October 16 state troops may be rushed to aid in cleaning up the crime situation after five men were killed in ten days. Most recent victims were Policeman Edward Hiner and George Green who were shot to death in an underground dive yesterday. One other officer was seriously wounded.

261 officers crew and passengers from the steamer City of Honolulu, burned at sea, were landed today aboard the army transport Thomas at Wilmington. Survivors praised Captain Lester and the crew for calm handling and swift evacuation while the West Farralione and Thomas ferried them to safety.
