Eight months after Sheriff L C Smith branded A E Wise a pet grafting jailer and ousted him, Wise is again employed by the county. Wise, discharged Apr 1 1906 for releasing a prisoner for $20, confessed to taking $10 and denied $20. Smith stated Wise was sent to Walla Walla and would be discharged after his return. The released prisoner Charlee B Bennett served 30 days for petit larceny and the incident was exposed by the prisoner and investigated by Smith. Smith seeks reelection as sheriff.
Yesterday afternoon Sergeant Deaver at the local recruiting office arrested two men identified as deserters sought by the navy yard. Police aided in a double arrest. The pair initially denied ties to the navy but later confessed. They were jailed overnight and sent to naval authorities this morning.
Richard Gambrill member of the Board of Trade testified before the interstate commerce commission that the Board of Trade adopted a rule to fix grain prices against advice from an attorney. He said Minneapolis and Chicago boards meet daily to set the highest price before opening, preventing higher offers to holders, and that the law is wrecking Chicago as a grain market.
Denver Oct 16 The mining congress met today with President Richards leading a large following to push the government to establish a department of mines modeled after the agricultural department. Delegates discuss Thomas F Walsh as secretary in charge of the department.
Two claims were presented yesterday in the George Ed. Adams embezzlement case before Judge Will H. Thompson. A. A. Aggaseiz seeks $84.05 and Adolph Fassbender seeks $664.05. The next hearing is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m.

John C. Hammond, aged 20, convicted of murdering his wife, whom he married when both were intoxicated. He received life imprisonment after the October Albany sentencing.
In St Louis the Trust company and savings bank sections of the American Bankers association met in session on a currency reform issue this afternoon. The main body will not convene until Wednesday.

Reno Mutchinson, secretary of the Y M C A, was shot by a highwayman in Spokane on October 16 while en route to a trustees meeting. He was directing a campaign for 150000 dollars to build a new Y M C A, leaving a widow and child. The assailant was killed. the body found on Postmaster Hartson’s lawn after declaring I have been shot.
