A strike mediation committee appointed by the mayor reports steady progress in talks between striking workers and former employers. Representatives from both sides meet in conference with mediators, no new demands announced, both sides open to near term settlement while discussions remain private.

The steamship Santa Ana under Captain Strand loaded at Tacoma for San Francisco then plans to return tomorrow at noon to take passengers. The Newsboy, captained by Corning, had a close call near West Point when heavy fox grounded the ship near shore at 9 am. The Newsboy had departed Nome on Sept 30 after a stop at Dutch Harbor delaying arrival to this port.
Work started this morning on a new eight inch water main along Madison Street from Fifteenth to Twenty third avenue. The new line replaces a worn out six inch main.
A petition filed before the rct of public works requests Sixth Avenue between Highland Drive and Galer Street be improved with grades sidewalks parking and ice. It seeks sidewalks parks and way as defined by the city engineer and proposes parking terraces and steps instead of a continuous roadway from Highland Drive to Comatock Street. Payment to be by five year bonds.
John Mulligan an old time petty thief was arrested in Seattle on suspicion this morning by OM cer Mayou. He was said to be attempting to smell a razor when taken into custody.
The Church of Christ filed a building permit to construct a two story frame church measuring 40 by 36 feet at 42 percent Tenth avenue northeast. Estimated cost is $3000.
Judge George fined A. A. Johnson ten dollars today for language toward Patrick Sherry that tended to provoke an assault. The incident occurred in court this morning and the action reflected judicial discipline.

L H Gray sold the 100 ton Laurel to Frank Burnett of Vancouver B C. Burnett will overhaul the vessel and fit it as a luxury long cruise boat with modern sleeping dining and storage rooms. An 18 month South Bealeland and Philippine archipelago cruise ends in Sidney Australia before inland touring and return by steamer. Burnett a director of United Canneries of British Columbia leads the venture.
