Bold Break for Freedom at Galt Lake Prison Escape

A partially successful escape by seven convicts from Galt Lake prison last night ended with three recaptured fugitives and four still at large. Nick Howarth, condemned to death for the Night Watchman Layton murder, was wounded but escaped. Jamel Lynch, also sentenced to death for Col. Prowse’s murder, escaped uninjured. A guard was shot, and one inmate killed during the chaos as prisoners fled over the wall with armed convicts.

Convicts Stage Jail Break Leaving Five Free

At 6 o clock guards Wilkine and Jacob began locking in prisoners when two convicts overpowered them and freed five others. Abe Majore and Abe Majore were both wounded during the breakout. Dayten was killed, Mullan wounded in the leg, and Waddell lightly hurt. Haworth and Lynch escaped. one guard fired on the group.

Drowned Man Off Koyukuk River Steamer

A nameless man drowned September 20 near the mouth of the Koyukuk river while aboard the steamer Koyukuk owned by Albert Cavanaugh of Beattie. He was knocked overboard near the wheel as the vessel passed the river mouth. A $100 reward is offered for recovery of the body. Also noted is a Bethany Presbyterian service for the 10th anniversary of Rev. W. A. Major's pastorate.
