England confronts the perilous task of mine fishing as North Sea trawlermen hunt German mines. In paired boats with a long hawser and kite, they drag depths 16 to 18 feet below, risking explosions and loss. A mine detonation could cripple a ship or end a crew.
Louis M. Lang, general contractor of Seattle roots, named by Mayor Gill at City Hall to succeed Austin E. Griffiths as chief of police. Lang served in Cuba and the Philippines, held civil service posts, led construction for Gibson & Smith, and supervised the Y M C A building. He is a Republican with seven years in Seattle.
Navigation in the Panama Canal halted again as a fresh upheaval at the bottom of Culebra cut on the east bank blocked traffic. Officials said traffic will not resume until the cut is entirely cleared.

An 11 year old boy, Ralph Morgan, is in critical condition at Providence hospital with a fractured skull after a collision with an auto driven by R D Pinney near 16th and Alpha. Pinney, assistant general freight agent of the Pacific Coast Steamship Co, was arrested but released without bond.

A terrific gale swept the Great Lakes today risking the safety of a score of vessels fighting the storm. Many ships were badly battered and docked in the harbor as crews endure the gale. State fish and game commissioner Darwin departs for San Francisco with a fish exhibit.
J D Ross city light superintendent describes A V Bouillon attack on municipal ownership as furious. Bouillon, ex public utilities chief and mayoral candidate, worked for Puget Sound Traction Light & Power Co. Mayor Gill and Ross criticize a municipal exhibit at 707 Secondary, saying the Chamber exhibit prepared by Whitman college students misleads the public about water department statistics.
