Ellensburg, Nov 7. A west bound Northern Pacific freight broke in Stam pede tunnel in the Cascades filling the bore with smoke and gas. Conductor Leonard Hallet of Seattle died within minutes after rescue. Seventeen crewmen were saved and revived. five others were initially thought dead but later recovered. Hallet lived in Seattle seven years and left a widow and two children.
Heavy rainfall caused two traffic incidents. Laura Carbon was struck crossing Second Avenue near Pike by J. G. Fenton's car. Waite's wagon was hit by Dr. H. A. Shaw's vehicle at 16th Avenue and Cherry Street, Waite sustaining a scalp wound.
Unofficial returns from Ohio First district show Congressman Nicholas Longworth defeated by 159 votes. Bowdie appears to lead. final tally may change. If Bowdie is declared elected Longworth may appeal to the House.
Ed Walsh of 202 Main street sustained a scalp wound and brain concussion when a taxi driven by R F Pettit struck a Mount Baker Park street car at Thirday and Jackson streets at about 11 pm last night. A companion in the auto, name unreadable, was cut by flying glass. Pettit said a passenger asked a question and he swerved to answer, causing the crash.
The Republican National Committee is expected to select John Wanamaker of Philadelphia as the party’s vice presidential candidate at the Chicago meeting next Tuesday to succeed the late James S. Sherman.

With ten counties still uncounted, Governor McGovern holds a 2,500 edge for reelection. Democrats expect additional gains as missing counties report.

An entertainment for the Longfellow school Mothers' Congress was staged last evening in the school building under Mrs. Louis A. Sterne. Readings by Miss Elizabeth Torrey and vocal solos by Mrs. Arthur Denton and Mrs. Sterne highlighted the program. Addresses were delivered by Mrs. Austin E. Griffiths and Miss Annie L. Gifford, principal, as about 200 mothers attended.
