Empress of Ireland sinks after collision in Gulf of St Lawrence

Autoist Hits Boy Goes On After Accident Arrests Made

Witnesses captured the license number as a car struck two boys at 150th Street and 14th Avenue North East. Dean Estes, 11, is hospitalized with possible skull fracture and broken leg while Eugene Speck, 11, suffers facial and head injuries. W C Phillips of Spring Sand and Gravel Co. fled the scene but was later arrested on $200 bail after investigators learned the extent of injuries. Clarence E Kidwell and wife were badly injured in a separate motorcycle collision. E E Uden was booked for traffic ordinance violation after a crash at Fourth and Virginia which also sent Margaret McCann to hospital with minor injuries.

Murphy Starts Suit to Disbar Attorney Casey Murphy

Prosecutor John Murphy filed a motion in superior court seeking disbarment of attorney Thomas J. Casey. Murphy alleges Casey solicited business in personal injury cases through his own efforts and with Frank McGuire. Judge Frater set Casey to answer charges on June 3 in the cited suits against Traction Co. and Charles P. Saunders.

Only 12 Women Saved From Empress of Ireland

A dispatch reports that only 12 women survived the Empress of Ireland disaster, with most of the survivors being crew members. The event occurred near Montreal on May 29.

Miss Eva Searle of Seattle listed as second cabin passenger aboard the Empress. She may be Miss Eva Searly of Tacoma. Two Bellingham men Nel Erickson headed to Bergen Norway and Peder Bjordal bound for Gothenburg Sweden also aboard as first class passengers.

Vancouver Grief Over Empress of Ireland Sinking

News from May 29 reports the Empress of Ireland disaster touching Vancouver with at least 20 deaths. Among victims were Salvation Army officers en route to England and Mrs. G. T. Hailey, mother of Captain A. J. Hailey of the Empress of India.

Peace Certain Bryan Declares Mediation Will Settle Mexican Trouble

Secretary of State Bryan told the cabinet mediation can now settle the Mexican crisis and that no concessions will be made to Huerta. He said the rebels would accept the mediators' verdict and drafts of a protocol would be ready in a week. Juan Urquide arrived as Carranza's representative as Mexico City rejoiced at the plan.

Lawyer Olson Battles Telephone Company Over $5 Fee

The Star recounts attorney George Olson advising the opponent to sue over a $5 cancellation fee from L. L. Vellat. Vellat refuses payment and the company declines to sue, fearing a jury bias and an angry subscriber uproar. A 1910 Seattle Hardware case against Pacific Telephone is noted as precedent and the Star urges state hearing resumption to challenge the fee.
