A 1919 comparison shows operating expenses nearly equal in Seattle and San Francisco, but Seattle’s tax rate over twice San Francisco’s. The speaker blames homeowners and property owners for bearing the tax burden while San Francisco requires other wealth to share costs. Extravagances must be cut and tax reform pushed.

Cairo report says forty eight people were killed and one hundred ninety one wounded in anti-British riots at Alexandria. Rioting resumed briefly with demonstrations spreading through the province.
Paul Devin, an engineering student, was in a lecture on differential calculus when a fellow student allegedly lifted his drawing set. Police were notified Tuesday and Devin can no longer draw.
The U S forestry service urges public help to prevent fires during Fire Protection week. The goal is to reduce 1921 fires below 1,438, the 1920 total recorded.
The Aero Club of the Northwest will hold a dinner at the Butler hotel on June 4 to organize activity toward making Seattle an aerial metropolis. Attendees aim to develop a coast to coast airplane mail service.
Mrs. KR Morton of Diller hotel was found unconscious at Columbus sanitarium after visiting friends. Dr G R Marshall fears possible death from suspected alcoholic poison, with indications pointing to ingestion while she was away from home. Her husband reports she seemed cheerful before vanishing for half an hour.
Miss Karen a 27 year old woman attempted suicide by turning on gas in her room at 408 Columbia Street. Pearl BE owner of the rooming house summoned neighbor Amil Engle after fumes were detected and the girl was rescued. She later explained to detectives her motive was overpowering unreturned love.
Portland brickmason William Kruger, trapped for 16 hours under bricks in a basement, dies at 42 from injuries. He was rescued yesterday and died in a local hospital, leaving a family.
A carefully dressed bandit robbed A. B. Smith at 1761 W Spokane Jr of $40 at gunpoint. No trace of the robber has been found.
Portland engineers warn the Union avenue approach to the interstate bridge linking Portland and Vancouver may be washed out by flood waters. Crews have worked 48 hours with sandbags as Willamette and Columbia rivers rise rapidly. If the Union causeway fails, interstate traffic could be disrupted.
Senator Johnson of California introduced a resolution urging a Senate investigation into West Virginia and Kentucky border warfare. The measure was referred to the Senate Labor Committee for consideration.

A burglar broke into Mrs. D. G. Gleason at 161 John Street and took 26 new phonograph records. In exchange he left 34 used records, including Off in the Stilly Night, and took no items from a misc collection of tablecloths dresses knives forks and evening gowns.
Weyland Pomeroy suffered a severely sprained back after a Monday night collision between his car and another vehicle. The impact caused the car to overturn.
San Francisco May 24 District Attorney Matthew Brady announced in court he is preparing new evidence in the Mooney case for the governor. He believes the material will leave little alternative but to pardon Thomas Mooney, serving a life sentence for alleged complicity in the 1916 San Francisco preparedness parade dynamitings.
In Bremerton on May 24 Mias Gertrude Wilant 22 was fatally injured when an automobile she rode in overturned on the Navy Yard highway near Port Orchard bay. Dust from a passing car blinded the driver H L Bartley who drove off the road and the car capsized trapping Miss Wilant beneath the machine.
Representative Flood introduces resolution asking Secretary of State to inform the house whether Ambassador George Harvey's recent war entrance statements were approved by the state department. The measure was brought to the floor in the house.
Four fugitives including Joe James J White Joe Dunn and B J Ward escaped from Cox County jail Sunday night. Posses from Everett chase them as sheriffs warn potential cross border movement near Blaine Washington. James and White previously sentenced to life imprisonment for habitual criminal status while Ward faces grand larceny charges.
In Kansas City Missouri on May jury selection began for Chester charged with first degree murder in the death of Miss Barton. Forty seven veniremen were examined as prosecutors and defense prepare for trial with Howard Winter identified as a key witness and an alleged accomplice.
A burglar earned twenty dollars a minute according to a report of a room break in at the Co. 8 Nicklin Conklin hotel on Virginia street. The intruder stole a gold watch valued at sixty dollars while the occupant was away for several minutes.
In Dublin on May 24, nineteen fice and 80 Sinn Feiners clashed for five hours near Newport Gow Mayo. Police reinforcements flanked the Sinn Feiners and drove them back. One constable was killed and a district inspector wounded. Several republicans also injured.
The memorial gateway at the South Park playfield will be dedicated at 7 p.m. by the Civic Improvement Club of South Park. Ex servicemen are invited. from 112 local servicemen, only four were killed.
