May Gov Swineford returned from Ketchikan and reported contracts for a 1f shaft on Aiila Gleda island gold and copper claims. Boston company opens Gravina Inlet claims 14 miles northwest of Ketchikan with gold and silver prospects. Vancouver Portland parties developing Ravine Island mine near Ketchikan with four workers. Sea Level plans to add mills and dumps. Helm Bay 20 miles north shows favorable reports. Prince William Sound also showing development. Dunn Kernan contracted to tunnel 16 feet on one claim. Swineford predicts strong mining growth before fall.
Five soldiers from the Twelfth Infantry were drowned when a raft used to move them across the Pasig River broke in midstream. The raft was overloaded and the men swept beyond reach of assistance, near Manila on May 4.
City Treasurer W A Sternberg dispatched nearly 140000 in warrant and interest payments. Principal and interest on judgment warrants totaled 4990. June interest remittance 54500 covered water, light and bridge bonds. Coupons to be redeemed via New York fiscal agents.

In Kalispell Montana Friday evening around 9 35 p m a man was run over by the cars and killed the impact described as cutting him in two. The accident occurred on the rail yard near the town.
The body was found about three miles west of Kalispell with a card in his pocket naming D. A. Hickman and Brainard Minnesota. He had worked at the Schage Laumber company’s mill west of Kalispell and authorities presume he fell from a train while returning to the mill. He was dead when discovered.
Paetan J. W. Powell and naval cadets Begert, Dubose, Whett, Williams are ordered to a term of observation at the Navy Yards in League Inland before sailing to Europe for a post graduate course in naval construction at Glasgow and Paris. Powell and cadets Begert and Dubose will go to Glasgow while cadets Wright and Williams proceed to Paris.
In Lewiston Maine Judge A D Cornish sentenced George W Pierce to 38 years in the state prison for attempting to poison sugar and coat with murder intent aimed at ex City Marshal H C Teel. Defense argued possible insanity after prior prosecutions and the motive of revenge.

N Okani a Japanese barber was arrested on a charge of attempting to pass a note raised from 1 to 10 dollars. He claimed the note came from a colored man shaved in his shop. The note circulated and ended at Dever's saloon on Sixth avenue south. Officer Joerson spotted it and notified Secret Service Agent Hazen who investigated. Okani faces trial tomorrow afternoon.

Fire was found at 1:90 this morning in a Terrace street dwelling between Fourth and Fifth avenues. The flames were quickly controlled with about $14 in damage to the house and contents. Mrs. Beacon, away overnight, returned to find her goods damaged and fell prostrate on the sidewalk. Two young women who rented rooms left about fifteen minutes before the blaze, and an airtight heater in the dining room is blamed for starting the fire.
