Marriet Crothers alias Rae Du Pont, once heiress to the so called Shoplifter Queen, confesses a three month training in a nationwide shoplifting ring. She says she stole $15 000 in gowns in one week, with seven gowns per trip, and describes a Convent to vaudeville path ending in crime. She was captured in Ban Francisco after leaving Portland five years ago.
Everett residents push for home rule bill initiative 44 to empower municipal seizure of Puget Sound Telephone Co by purchase or condemnation. city attorney says the move could create a municipal utility and curb state control as citizens rally against the telechronometer.
Charlestown May 18 The state case against West Virginia miners for murder and treason appears doomed to acquittal or hung jury in the Blizzard case. Defense argues the constabulary backed operators and provoked unrest, while witnesses say the march aimed to confront gunmen rather than overturn government.
Mrs. George Carlson who survived a Wednesday crash through the University bridge railing remains in a severe hysterical state at home 2234 Second Ave. W. Her sister Mrs Genevieve Marcum was found dead in the water after rescuers pulled Mrs Carlson from the river.
State officials warn all residents in the earwig infested area to lease their property by next Saturday or have the work done by the state at higher cost. I. B. Coyne, special inspector in the agricultural division, notes fees will be added and a law against the property may result. A home formula for bait mixes one pound green to 16 pounds bran with water for three applications.
A 77 year old man, Abraham Holm, was found fatally shot on Genesee t and 49th ave S W in West Seattle at 1 a m. The body showed a 38 caliber revolver nearby and a damp handkerchief with broken glasses. Police reported powder burns on the shirt and flesh indicating a muzzle contact wound. Mrs Holm said he woke earlier for a painting job, possible work pursuit. Debris suggested a hurried search of pockets for valuables.
In Rome on May 18 a hospital fire at Santo Spirito near St. Peter's killed nineteen people by death or asphyxiation. Eight hundred patients were endangered. four others were seriously burned and one fatally. Firemen and guards were injured during the rescue effort as victims leaped from windows and relatives pressed forward. The ward for incurables was destroyed first.
Stanley Hages a mechanic at the Wildwood garage on Rainier avenue turned the table on two bandits who tried to rob him early Thursday. The men called from Rainier and Alacka street saying their car broke down. Hages confronted them with a gun and the pair fled after he demanded their watch and money.
Dr George Harding father of the president denies circulating East reports that he predicted the world’s end before the Seventh Day Adventists convention he is attending. He says he discussed only medical subjects before committees and has not spoken to the convention in a way that could be seen as a prediction.
Loring C. Skeeter battles a bandit at 103 Woodland Park Ave. The robber, Ivan Snyder, 19, is captured after Streeter wrests his revolver, punches him to the floor, and restrains him until officers arrive. Patrolmen Stanley and Krush assisted in custody.
Council committee action on C. KB. Fitzgerald's resolution to open negotiations with Henry Ford to lease part of the Skagit power site. Mayor Caldwell, the full council, and the board of public works will consider the proposal next week amid doubts over the city's authority to lease Ruby creek under current government permit.
Jimmy Fiona a 14 year old star newsboy suffered a skull fracture when a board struck by a motor truck at Fifth Ave and Union St. hit him in the head. He was not expected to live and remained in Providence hospital Thursday with no improvements reported.
The disabled motor ship Ozmo, with Captain Worth and 17 crew aboard, was being towed toward Coos Bay harbor by the steamer Daisy despite heavy fog. The Willamette had given up the search and headed toward San Francisco, while Coast radio stations recounted the distressed vessel’s last moments and the fog’s sudden return.
Northwest winds brought rain back to Seattle at 6 30 a m Thursday after five days of sunshine. By noon the temperature stood at 45 degrees, down from 60 degrees at noon the day before. The wind shifted to the southeast, but the rain continued.
