Seattle business leaders press the city council to block bills seen as pro public welfare. They aim to kill Griffiths and Erickson measures and oppose strap hanging while praising the council for taking people first policy. Citizens watch whether the council backs reform or bow to wealth.
Neil Rowley a nine year old in Seattle desires a pair of wooden legs to be happy after losing his father to the Oregon outlaw Harry Tracy. Seattle groups plan a benefit dance at K P hall to raise funds for the legs.
Lang admitted engagement to Mae Aronstein and hired a detective to shadow her. Aronstein says Lang promised $100,000 marriage gift and various luxuries, while Lang contends flirtation and a frameup. The case seeks $50,000 damages for breach of promise to wed.
Reports from Juarez detail armistice talks between Provisional President Madero and Diaz representative Carbajal as rebels in Guerrero Chiapas and Morelos threaten. Diaz may resign by June 1, but some commanders refuse to honor terms, risking renewed fighting and foreign outrages.
Gov. M. E. B. Hay argues against recall for judges and for gubernatorial appointment of all judges with recall only for the governor's performance. He contends judges interpret laws, not write them, and that appointed judges are more carefully chosen, often re-elected. He notes his own appointments and compares them with current county judges as measures of merit. He will remain in Seattle through the weekend for labor and employers’ bargaining on liability coauthors with George.
Tacoma May 18 The Moorhead murder trial centers on witness credibility with the defense arguing self defense. Harry Hill rancher near Moorhead’s home and Mrs. Frank Wing testify for the defense as the chief witnesses. Hill contests the coroner’s account and supports the boy’s statement, while Mrs. Wing backs the defense.
Four men died and two more were injured when a landslide trapped workers on the Mount Hood Railroad and Power Company line east of Portland. Two bodies were recovered, and digging continued for the remaining two. Hospitals report four injured likely to survive. Names of the dead include Warrish, D. Hunt, Ed Togansen, Wu Straniey.
Senator Henson introduced a resolution in the Wisconsin state senate demanding Gov. McGovern investigate the trial and conviction of John F. Dietz the defender of Cameron dam. Lieut. Gov. Oglesby ruled out the resolution on a point of order amid the discussion.
Occasional rain is forecast for tonight and Friday. Strong southwest winds are expected as the system moves through the region.
Central Labor Council endorses Councilman Erickson in pushing lower residential lighting rates. Resolution condemns the light superintendent and Seattle Electric Co. aims to reduce the 8? cent rate to 7 cents with a 50 cent minimum, saving workingmen about 50 cents monthly in summer.
Senator Gore of Oklahoma introduced in the Senate a bill to amend the Sherman law. It presumes any contract combination or conspiracy in restraint of trade declared illegal as unreasonable and imposes a prison term of two to ten years on those involved.

Governor Wilson of New Jersey arrives in Portland and declines to rule out being U.S. president. He opposes recall or popular election of judges, cites New Jersey practice of appointment, supports direct primary and Oregon-style reforms for later expansion. He backs commission gov in cities and direct senatorial elections.
In Calgary on May 18 Lucille Morry, a 20 month old girl, died after a pet bear kept at the city fire hall mauled her in Holy Cross hospital. The bear, chained to a telephone pole, had been teased by small boys and grew cross before seizing the child as she wandered away from her parents.
Foster Kelley formerly of Seattle and Ilva May Henry appeared before Police Judge Shortall in San Francisco on a charge of aiding in the evasion of a court order involving two Henry children. The hearing was continued due to absent prosecution attorneys.
May 18 report says rebels under General Pryce who captured Tia Juana may keep fighting in Lower California or disband after a conference tonight between John Kenneth Turner and General I Pryce.
The Mercer Investment Co a holding firm for brewing interests faces two bills from merchandise vendors. A suit in the superior court brought by A B Green for 176 dollars from the Minneapolis saloon at 1511 First Ave alleges nonpayment and ownership dispute. A second suit in Justice C Brown's court by Green for the California Wine and Cordial Co San Francisco seeks 97 dollars for merchandise.
Mrs. Kate Lovell pleads for news of her son Harry Lovell who is believed to be in or near Seattle. She asks anyone with information to contact her or the authorities so they can reunite.
Two children at 8117 Western Ave mourn a missing man, G. A. Kuske known as Casey who left the city for Hot Springs March 30. A former war repairer in Seattle and member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen, he is about 40, 160 pounds, 5 feet 1 inch, dark complexion. Any information should be sent to the Carmen’s union at Labor Temple.
