The Universal Peace Conference opened at The Hague as M. Central was indisposed and Dutch Foreign Minister Beaufort led the ceremony. Czar Alexander III received congratulations from President McKinley via telegram praising the peace effort.
The second annual Seattle district Epworth league convention starts tonight at Battery Street M E Church and runs through Sunday. About 10 delegates are expected from leagues north of Seattle to the boundary line and west of the mountains. John Palmer will welcome attendees and A E B Cornelius will respond. Rev J W Kendall will preach a short sermon and a social session follows. Tomorrow the conference proceeds with the program to be carried in the Star May 10.
The Presbyterian General Assembly of the United States convenes in Minneapolis with about 600 delegates. Rev. Wallace Radcliffe opens the session with the annual sermon. Dr. Sample leads in the moderatorship race, with Dr. Haines a strong second, as finances of missionary boards draw heavy attention due to declining contributions.
Deputy Internal Revenue Collector H. C. Gregg uncovers a fraud against the government and seizes 1199 cigars with fake revenue stamps. One thousand were taken from a Walla Walla merchant and 669 from a Pom eroy cigar dealer. More seizures expected soon.
Newport R I May 18 The alleged spite fence row involving Mrs Herman Oelrichs is described as tame. Neighbors Perry Belmont H Payne Whitney and G Parkman of Beaton stand on intimate terms with her. The cliffs bound the estate to the east and a 16 foot fence is noted.
A barrier is being erected on four sides of Mrs. Oeviridis' new house site to deter the many excursionists who visit the cliffs in summer and the unemployed who seek work there daily.
In Hopkinsville Kentucky on May 18 the well known colored Baptist preacher Rev Peter Bronaugh and his young grandson were swept from their buggy and drowned while trying to ford a swollen stream within the city limits.
New Albany Indiana May 18 on his farm four miles north of town Harry Stacy was struck by lightning and killed instantly. The accident occurred during a storm that swept the area leaving debris and damaged crops. Stacy's death is reported to the county authorities who are investigating the event.
Representatives controlling hay press machinery in the western states have met and decided to advance prices by 10 to 20 percent. They cite higher raw material costs and rising wages as the reasons for the increase.
New York May 1 Rev WC De Lyon Nichols assistant rector of St Luke's Protestant Episcopal church has been received as a communicant at St Stephen's Roman Catholic church He wrote the Greek Madonna and a new work The Decadenta will expose social iniquity and folly among fashionable folk and hardened sinners
Skagway and Seattle chamber leaders urge Washington Post Office to replace Skagway postmaster citing long illness and office decline harming business. Seattle and Skagway groups form a committee to study Snoqualmie Falls project, while BC Board of Trade notes safety lights on Alaska route will be upgraded. Senator Turner welcomes future speaking engagement. Three new members join the chamber.
The City of Seattle departs north tomorrow night with Col. J. Williams and 12 men bound for Bennett. They will sail on a Williams small steamer to Daweon then descend the Yukon to St Michael and finally to Cape Nome to develop mining claims with full mining equipment.
Marshal August Meidley and posse members pursued several tramp suspects. When halted, the marshal fired. One man was killed instantly. others surrendered and were jailed. The deceased carried a rabbits foot as a macabre token.
In KHDMK BY Indiana on May 4 workers at Martetta Glass Works demand pay for all ware culled by the company. The plant will keep thirty seven shops operating and will introduce machines using patented blowing technology.

W Bunn of Paul, NP director, stays at the Butler. Dr de Soto of the Baptist association collects souvenirs for Beattle visit, plans leather cover gifts. Association aims for San Francisco convention illustrated coverage in Seattle papers.
Norwegian citizens of Beattle marked eighty fifth anniversary of independence with a Madison street park festival. Festivities included speeches by C. M. Thuland and O. B. Barbo, followed by singing of America and dancing as the pavilion glowed with Japanese lanterns and colored lights.
Rumors of jury corruption among prominent attorneys prompted BE Benson to discharge the civil department jury before term. named lawyers include Frederick Haneman E F Brain Wirmin C Tucker T J Humes and John H Powell. jurors discharged list includes S C Roe M Powers B E White R E Bridges and others.
Rumors say the Seattle and Northern line from Anacortes to Hamilton in the northern estate was bought by Michigan lumbermen in the interest of President J. J. Hill of the Great Northern. The Pacific Coast company owns the railroad, but its president J. D. Farrell is absent, making confirmation difficult.
A man identified as L. M. McMillan of Mobile Alabama and a woman D B Hollands arrived in Mannington West Virginia with a driver. After a quarrel en route the man shot himself in Line Wetzel County and died saying Mobile Oh what an awful trip.
George Dargeona, a colored painter, was painting a meat market front at Third Avenue and Yester Way when the scaffold gave way. He grabbed a wire screen but his wrists caught on two meat hooks and he hung briefly. Market men freed him. his wounds were lacerated but not considered dangerous.
Gomes today issued a manifesto to the Cubana urging them to lay down their armas in compliance with American demands and to accept the money tendered. Anti American feeling has risen sharply and grave disorders are feared.
A. B. Chilberg of Columbia Navigation will sail on the City of Seattle tomorrow night to Dawson and then to Circle City Rampart and St Michael. He aims to inspect the Mon arch Sovereign and the barge Admiral idle in Yukon sloughs and at risk after ice break and spring floods. The voyage may last about four months. J. B. Wood will soon return to Dawson.
Mrs. N H Young reports witnessing a man lying on Summit avenue and Fast Pike Street after a Monday night incident. Burke claims a shot to the head and robbery, but authorities note wounds may stem from a blunt instrument. no shots heard by Mrs Young. Police continue investigations with no new developments.
Marysville Ohio May 18 Police Judge Warnhart of London sentenced John Coffee and John Kelly to three years each in the work house for habitual drunkenness. The punishment is described as the heaviest ever in a police court. Coffee and Kelly were town characters known as the regulars.
Eight year old Johnnie Walker vanished from his Philadelphia home on Monday afternoon and remained hidden for almost two days. He was found unconscious in a third story front room near his parents after authorities traced his cries through a nearby mill’s noise.
Bryan reports three hoe bos robbed the harness store of W. H. Miley yesterday and were pursued by authorities.
The Western Central Labor Union passed a resolution condemning Gen Merriam for banning union miners from Wardner Idaho. The body opposes violence and property destruction and pledges moral and financial support to Couer dAlene district miners in their right to organize against unlawful arrest.
In Edinburgh on May 18 a Norwegian ship Viking brought news of a letter written by Andree the Arctic explorer. The letter, found in April by a farmer on Iceland’s northeast coast, was addressed to the Polar expedition at Gothenburg and bore Andree’s own stamp. The fragment ends with a tense exchange between characters.
