Reports from San Francisco indicate Mrs McKinley shows gradual improvement after a critical period. Doctors note nourishment and stronger pulse while President McKinley attends to public duties and plans to visit her bedside after a park walk. Relatives and physicians remain cautiously hopeful about her recovery.
Wenett May 17. J W Porter carpenter at Widauer’s mills fell from scaffolding during morning work. The scaffold gave way and he plummeted to the ground with three other workers nearby. Porter died minutes later after striking a projecting timber. He leaves a widow and children.
Newspapers give space to report Mrs McKinley’s condition and many papers comment with sympathy. Over one hundred cables of condolence and sympathy from European rulers and nobility were sent to President McKinley yesterday.
Secretary Cortelyou reports the condition of Mrs. McKinley as of May 17 at 10 p.m. The update reflects the health status and any observable progress following the First Lady’s hospitalization.

Mary Cowan 49 wife of KR H Cowan of Berlin Washington died this morning after a cancer illness. The body will be brought to Bonney Stewart's morgue for disposition and services.
Williard Bradburn a former pugilist with a double barreled shotgun tried to collect 130300 from A. B. Baxter & Co. after losses in the rising market He demanded money through a wire screen and caused a panic but was arrested without payment.
In Seattle on June 3 examinations for additional postoffice clerks will offer a $1,400 yearly salary. A separate June 18 exam is announced for a meat inspector. The notice, dated May 17 from Bisbons California, comes via the local post office. Martin Wolke, a Southern Pacific engineer, was killed instantly while inspecting track near Bisbons.
