Grand Master Frank T. Hawley of the Switchmen's Union of North America spoke before a labor gathering at the G A R hall. Local presiding officer W V Canwell and welcome speaker Meyer Hamen noted union friendliness to city governance. Hawley praised the Washington State Federation of Labor but said a nationwide federation is premature. He urged railroad men to join their class unions amid a community of interests trend and supported immigration restriction as a labor solution. He visited Lake Washington and will tour the savy yard. The switchmen's union claims 18 000 members, including about three fifths of North American rail switchmen, and Hawley stated the organization opposes strikes except as a last resort.
