Relief Efforts Under Way After Martinique Eruption

News from St Pierre reports a catastrophic eruption of Mount Pelee. Vessels are pressed into service to transport relief supplies to Martinique sufferers while the treasury is asked to fund and speed up shipments. Casualties rise as fires and lava devastate the city and surrounding areas. Consul Prentis and family are dead and at least 60,000 homeless.

A cablegram from Fort de France reports marines inspecting St Pierre where ruins bury many victims. North end of Martinique inaccessible due to ash rain and violent eruption. last night’s rumbling included flashes and ash and stone protection. The colonies office says the entire northern end and its population, including unreported villages, are destroyed.

Seattle Woman Sues Dentist for 15000 in Breakup Case

Sadie Donovan, a 22 year old Seattle woman, sues Dr Wilfred Lawrie for 15000 dollars for breach of promise after he withdrew from their engagement. The complaint alleges March proposal and April wedding plans, with a costly trousseau and public humiliation. Lawyer J M McCafferty represents the plaintiff and trial is set to proceed.

Trial date set in State v Stewart and Lawson

The case State v. James G. Stewart and O. V. Lawson was set for trial on the 26th of this month. A demurrer by the defendants was overruled and Lawson entered a not guilty plea. Stewart had been arraigned earlier and entered the same plea.

Mrs McDonald Thanks Helpers After Eviction Near Miss

Mrs F L McDonald and her daughter Mi lan with two grandchildren were nearly evicted from 911 Tenth Avenue South. They are now housed on Dearborn Street near Eighth Avenue South. McDonald expressed gratitude and said Rebecca Colling found them a new house and the Palace of Sweets provided steady work for her daughter in law with a raise. The relief was timely, a godsend.

Brakeman Killed While Switching Cars at Snohomish

Walter Fitarr a brakeman on the 8 1 railway fell between cars during switching at Snohomiah yesterday and was killed. He was a young man from Saginaw Michigan and left a brother believed employed in railways in the Northwest whose address is unknown.
