Seven armed bandits tried to rob a Boston man, Maurice Baldwin, and Cuban companions in Santiago. Baldwin feigned soldiers with a waving hat, prompting the criminals to surrender and be bound with hands behind their backs. They were marched to the city and jailed.
Sir William Van Horne, president of Canadian Pacific, arrived by private car from the south and left for Vancouver. Asked about a New York report he would resign in favor of VP Shaughnessy, he declined to deny or affirm it. Born in Illinois, he started in railroading at thirteen and rose to president by age forty-five.
The Improved Order of Red Men in the city since yesterday will hold a grand parade this evening followed by a ball and reception in Rank e hall. The city council, Comptroller Par ty and Engineer Thompson left this morning for Cedar lake to inspect the watershed tributary and discuss possible pollution. Frankie fon, secretary of the board of public works, departed yesterday to arrange accommodations. They plan to return Saturday as Judge Moore, recovering from fever, stays away and Judge Wil llameon of Tacoma presides in court.
A large steamer named Satkura Maru rammed toward the Newcastle bunkers at Smith Cove docks today. Captain Gilmore's failed attempt to reverse engines caused the vessel to strike the Black Diamond bunkers beside the C. Fr. Sargent. The incident ended before full collision was avoided, with significant damage suspected.
Aboard the Sakura, a crash produced a neat six inch hole in the Sargent’s outer plank when the port anchor knob embedded on the starboard side as the steamer backed. If Sakura had been moving faster, damage would have been greater.
Washington reports that when the disarmament conference opens at The Hague on May 16 both the United States and Great Britain will push for settling international disputes by arbitration.

The steamer Humboldt, chartered by Capt. W. W. Dispatch agent H. 8. Brebbing in Portland and Hi. M. Maines of the Phillipe-Jud son excursion company were among officials noted returning from Portland, following a derailment that delayed service east of the mountains.
Notice received by Collector Jackson reports F Dr Schuyler, Chinese inspector at Beattie, has been reassigned to duty in the city. The May 10 communication confirms the personnel change affecting local inspections and administration.
WARNER Idaho May 10 The Mineowners in the county are obeying General Merriam orders that no union miners will be allowed to work in the mines. Few mines are operating as authorities await a desirable class of men to enter the country.
Chicago May 10 The combine of flouring milling corporations from New York Buffalo Syracuse and a head of the lakes has been affected and the trust is capitalized at 40 million dollars.
Detectives Powers Corbett and Wappenstein raided three Chinese opium dens yesterday afternoon. At 116 Washington Street Ah Yik and Chang Wa were captured with outfits. A Wa Chong building yielded Ah Heb and T F Oak, a bunco man. A third den on Washington Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues south produced seven Chinese men and opium outfits. Suspects were brought before Judge Cann and fined 2 50 each. Bunco man Galt known as Trandy Joe was fined and jailed thirty days. Opium pipes were destroyed in court.
Reports from marine men say the Loyal, also known as Jost in Alaskan waters, is lost with twelve crewmen presumed dead. No contact since September near St Michael and Dutch Harbor, with possible sightings in St Michael harbor. The Beattie departed May 1, 1898 for Kotzebue Sound, planning two years in the north.
Moritz Rosenthal the wizard of the piano appears for one performance at the Seattle Theater with strong advance sales indicating a crowded house. At the Third Avenue Theater nightly audiences laugh at Bobby Gaytor with a strong company of comedians and specialty artists in bright jokes. John Griffiths opens at the Seattle Theater tomorrow night for three performances in The Avenger.
Charles Parker of Santa Clara secured the government seeds distribution contract with a bid of 64,000 pounds. Seeds must be ready by January 1, 1900, per the award announced in Washington on May 10.
The board of regents met in the chamber of commerce room and approved establishing a university law department with a cost cap of 4000 dollars. Fifty students were recommended for degrees pending faculty approval. Equipment funding was referred to the executive committee. Col James Hamilton Lewis appears before Judge Jacobs this afternoon arguing the Nordstrom case.
Capt Lee Ingraham died of pneumonia after a three day illness at San Juan Washington. He leaves a wife and daughter in New Hampton Minnesota and Dunlap Washington and a brother Major RE Ingraham. He came from Maine in the 1870s, later returned to New Hampton, then Seattle, and recently to San Juan. He was a noted reader and brother of climber Major Ingraham.
Chicago May 10 The great steel trust is nearly completed with capitalization set at 800 million dollars.
The tenth annual convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union of King County meets in Ballard. Tonight features a gold medal oratory contest with speakers Mrs Freeman, Mrs Libby, Mrs Rockwell, Mrs Worth, Mrs Ratcliffe, Mrs Higgin, and contestants Mrs Wilmot Whitfield and Mrs Rhoda Miller. subjects include Down with the wine glass and A tragedy of Tay.
