In a Portland case linked to the Holy Rollers movement, Hertha Starr Creffield shoots Crffield’s top aide and later describes believing him a divine messenger. Creffield, a former penitentiary inmate, had drawn followers to Waldport before the fatal attack. The wife, shaken by events, tells officers how poverty framed their later life.
A man named Beattie shot Creffield as they walked near First Ave Seattle, killing him. Creffield’s wife gave statements under police questioning while Beattie confessed he acted after learning about harm to his sisters. Investigators traced Creffield to Southeast Seattle and the Columbia River valley where his religious work had resumed.
George Mitchell travels from Portland to Seattle to confront the Holy Roller sect leader Creffield. He finds Creffield with Maud Hurt, shoots him dead, and surrenders to police. Creffield’s followers had formed camps near Waldport and Corvallis, spurring fear of lynching and arrests as the sect's influence waned.
A 3:30 am blaze at Arlington dock destroyed the warehouse and endangered the Sherman transport. Firefighters fought flames from three sides as explosions from stored ammunition shook the waterfront and many government and civilian goods were ruined or damaged.
George Mitchell says he came to Seattle to kill after seeing the slain man on First Avenue. He admits shooting the man, claiming the victim “ruined” his two and that he took the life. Ida Creffield, wife of the slain man, defends her husband and questions motive. Esther, the couple’s daughter, is staying with relatives in Corvallis.
A Portland woman, Mrs. Creffield, denied involvement in the shooting of her husband Charles Creffield, who led the Holy Rollers in Salem and Seattle. The case reveals past abduction and divorce amid the controversial sect, with Ammon Mitchell confessing to killing Creffield after rescuing his sisters from the followers. Public records show a second marriage license for the couple surfaced among the dead man's belongings.
