Prominent Seattle women urge a united effort to honor the Manila returning Washington volunteers with a grand outdoor homecoming. They propose a committee led by ladies, fund raising by personal solicitation, and activities at the train or boat arrival, with emphasis on peace and community involvement.
Mayor Humes said he will appoint ten members to a celebration committee as provided by city council resolution. The panel will be representative and nonpartisan to honor the Washington volunteers returning home. He plans to name selections within days and collaborate with the chamber of commerce on fundraising and events.
Admiral Dewey reported that all but seven of the Yorktown's cutter crew were captured by Spaniards. The remaining seven were at Fanifredo Filipino headquarters after the Yorktown crew went ashore to aid Spaniards besieged by Filipinos.
Manila reports say Filipino envoys met General One again on May 3 and urged a truce of three months until the Filipino congress could decide whether the army should surrender to the Americans. They repeated the same key demand for armistice terms and pause in hostilities.
Envoys to Aguinaldo report General Otin refused their request and the Filipinos are tightening defenses. If terms are not reached, a forward American movement into the northern provinces may follow.

Local railroad men expect northern road home seekers excursions to be suspended for the summer and perhaps until next month. Patronage has declined and the trips would clash with regular summer travel. Railroads plan a summer intermission but will resume next winter. Southern roads have long operated them and spurred interest along their lines.

Hi Yei the Imperial Japanese training ship arrived off Echnabach dock yesterday afternoon after sighting Three Mile Rock. A steam launch of Japanese residents was refused boarding except paymaster general Y Kuwashima who rushed a cable to Japan. Ship will stay about a week to ten days then visit Tacoma before San Francisco and San Diego on its Pacific tour ending in Hawaii. Visitors may inspect the vessel on set days yet to be announced.

The Spokane Northern Telegraph company opened its Republic Washington office on Saturday linking Republic and Spokane for direct telegrams. The 45 mile line, built along the state road from Marcus, required 20 days of stringing wires through heavy mountain snow.
