May 2 Tacoma bakeries largely closed after a negotiating session between Master Bakers' association and journeymen bakers failed to settle the new wage scale and conditions. Three shops are paying the new scale per Secretary R Webster of the Bakers' union. Webster called a union and sellers meeting for 2 PM to seek ways to provide fair bread to the public as Mortimer Miller of the Master Bakers' association warned there will be no bread today.
Spokane reports ongoing bakers strike with nine bakeries signing a new scale of four dollars weekly increase and Sunday work elimination. Non union help and office staff fill gaps at major shops while teamsters and chauffeurs threaten action. The closed shop remains the central dispute.
Tacoma May 2 Tacoma Metal Trades unions voted overwhelmingly against the proposed wage scale settlement from shipyard owners. A tabulated referendum last night showed 13 unions voting against it while one union the shipyard watchmen voted for it and five unions sent no returns.
London May 2 United Press dispatch says Admiral Kolchak's army drives Bolsheviki forces southwest of Sterlitamak advancing 90 miles according to an Omsk report dated April 24.
A modest clerk named Smith becomes a war hero on a Puget Sound blue and gold day. He leads a squad, holds a ruined farmhouse, and dies after his machine gun battle ends. The narrator asks readers what their own dreams and sacrifices will be worth in dollars and gold.
Oregon tops seven states in the 12th federal reserve district Victory Loan subscriptions with Portland leading the four largest cities. By noon Thursday the district quota stood at 301,500,000 with 74,650,550 subscribed and Washington and Seattle in second place.

He had been convicted previously and released from Pierce County jail last February.

Paris May 2 The Germans will have a maximum 15 days after the peace treaty presentation to accept or reject terms. The date for presentation is not fixed but expected Monday or Tuesday with Tuesday likeliest. There will be no oral discussion. German replies may be written and must be complete within the period.
United Press reports two senators, Hiram Johnson of California and Medill McCormick of Illinois, will oppose the revised League of Nations Covenant. Johnson plans a detailed statement arguing the covenant is un American and would violate U S sovereignty threatening America's status as a free nation.
Washington May 2. Fearing anarchist plots, bombs were sent to President Wilson and peace conference members. Postal officers warned Paris and urged caution handling suspicious packages. Mail screening intensified as authorities suspect terrorists in an Eastern city. Offley cited a single fanatic theory.
The league to enforce peace announced conventions to secure ratification of the league covenant will be held in 15 states in late May and early June. Planned events include venues in New Hagland and Middle West states.
