A mutiny broke out on the ship LAnnecoshire after leaving Vancouver and the vessel is now at Port Townsend awaiting a new crew. Two mates refused to work claiming the crew were greenhorns. the master ordered a return to port with lumber bound for Freeman Vie.
A nocturnal gun battle near the old university grounds involved two highwaymen and city detectives. Though nearly thirty shots were fired, no one was injured, with Detective Kennedy taking a bullet through his overcoat. The robbers fled as officers and citizens fired toward them behind a telegraph pole and an umbrella shield.
The Vladivostok squadron is reported at Nikolaievsk at the Amur river mouth, as Gen Kouropatkin seeks meeting with Chinese commander Gen Ma who refuses. The move, far from active fronts, is seen as of little strategic value with ice in Tartary Gulf hampering passage.
Reports from Tokyo and Yankow say Japan pressed inland at Port Arthur on Sunday to trap the Russian fleet and to move troops into Liaotung peninsula. Tokyo notes a large force already on the peninsula with more to come. In Yankow sixty five transports and five warships reportedly approached Newchwang but withdrew and rejoined the fleet.
In a skirmish between Russian Cossacks and Japanese infantry near Anju and Laing, over 100 Cossacks were killed and wounded. Japanese forces reportedly repulsed and drove back the attackers.

Private dispatches from St. Petersburg say the Russian cruiser Boyarin likely struck a floating mine in Port Arthur harbor a week ago and was not mentioned in later engagements. The loss of Captain Stepanoff of the transport Yininel, killed by a mine, has hampered fleet operations and revealed hidden mine locations.

Spokane March 29 Burglar entered the postoffice at Post Falls Idaho early Sunday morning. He broke open the safe after wrapping it with clothing to deaden noise and escaped with about $200 in money and stamps and some pension checks. It is believed to have been the work of experts.
