Japanese reports say Admiral Togo trapped the Russian fleet at Port Arthur on Sunday sinking four steamships at the harbor mouth. Later Japanese battleships shelled the city in a bombardment from the harbor entrance.
Vice Admiral Makaroff reports the Japanese second attempt to block Port Arthur failed. Russian defenses damaged two Japanese steamers, with three stranded, and the harbor remained open. The Stuint destroyer was floated after engine damage and the crews restored control. An action by Kedroff and Pilsoudsky cut fire wires and extinguished fires aboard a steamer.
Vice Admiral Alexieff reports to the emperor from Mukden. A torpedo boat Stiinl was damaged in an enemy attack on March 27 and beached near Golden Hill before refloating. Casualties are not yet confirmed as the battle unfolds with Japanese torpedo boats and the fleet engaging in the roadstead and harbor.
Utahanea pride shows in Salt Lake daughters of Zion elders as singers and actresses with Maude Adams noted among notable locals. Salt Lakers claim Zion has sent more handsome feminine representatives than cities of its size.
Walter J. Bishop aged 35 died by drinking carbolic acid in a rooming house at 214 Beacon Street early yesterday morning. His body was found about 12:30 last evening beside the poison bottle after a door was forced open. Bishop, formerly of Mexican City, held a position with Wells Fargo. Mrs John Gilliam of 1447 Twenty first Avenue was notified but offered no light on the case. The body was taken to the Bonney Watson morgue.
A. Leander of 117 Seneca street was robbed at Pine street and Fourth avenue by two masked men. One kept him at gunpoint while the other searched his pockets and stole 11 dollars and 50 cents. Police were notified soon after the incident.
March proceedings in the Botkin case draw long lines and crowds at the courthouse. John Seymour testifies he searched a room for arsenic but did not look under a lounge where a candy box note later appeared. Willem Raynaud links handwriting on money orders to the prisoner.

Burkhart from Fort Wrangle. Captain Johnson reports a pleasant voyage though Alaska remains cold and water supply was limited to Juneau due to frozen mains along other towns.
John Connelly and B A Thorn ton were arrested yesterday by the police on a charge of stealing a wagon from N McKinnon. Both prisoners are lodged in the city jail. McKinnon swore to a complaint before Justice Cann charging them with grand larceny.
John Coatello alias Johnny Hayes known as Johnny behind the Rocks, a California stage robber, was arrested yesterday by City Detectives Barbee and Tennant. He denied identity, but locals claim he is the outlaw. He is not wanted for a crime but may be told to leave the city.
The sub-committee of the national committee warned Chicago Republicans to deposit 15000 or lose the convention. Sergeant-at-arms Stone served the notice. Local leaders say funds will come, though no promise was made. An executive session was scheduled this afternoon. hotel men fear a loss of 960000.

Nassir Khan refuses visit after learning Morris presented evidence linking him to the murder of Merili during Obabshaw and Petit Khan defense. The matter is set for Judge Bell’s ruling this afternoon.
The civil service commission will meet tonight to pass on applications for city positions and set dates for annual examinations. Of 42 applicants, 213 are laborers with about 50 jobs to fill. Shortages are most acute in engineering fire and police, with increases planned once new engine houses are finished.
