A English packet believed ship ran during a fierce storm near Lisbon. All crew aboard are presumed lost as passengers and cargo disappear in the wreck.
Detectives arrest W. Boyd after his wife Mrs. W. Boyd reports a brutal beating. He allegedly threw her on a red hot stove causing a severe arm burn and injuries to her head. Officers find Boyd at 100% Seventh Ave with a young child nearby and note his intoxication.
Frank Beott, a male soldier at Fort Lawton, escaped the guard house for the second time this month. He fled into brush, reached a rowboat at Smith's Cove, and headed offshore as police and Ballard authorities issued a lookout and a $600 reward for his capture.

Reports say the Welland interests back a plan to control saloon supply north of Los Angeles with exclusive contracts in about 138 Seattle outlets. The fight pits California brewers against local Seattle Brewing and Malting, aiming to ruin or dominate the Pacific coast market. Local agents and saloon men speculate the campaign includes price cuts and saloon takeovers as the battle widens to Portland and beyond.
Washington dispatch reports the house naval affairs committee endorsing a naval program in the appropriation bill totaling 99.75 million dollars. It allocates 6 million for one battleship, three destroyers at 760 thousand each, 1 billion for submarines, 100 thousand each to begin Bremerton and Atlantic dock construction, Bremerton dock at 1.4 million, and 100 thousand to repair the Constitution. Robbers detonated dynamite to blast the Bentley Bank safe in Bentley Kansas and escaped with $1500 in cash. No injuries reported as investigators review the crime scene and surveillance for clues.
Rome reports Archbishop Ireland arrived and requested a private audience with the pope today.
United States Commissioner Foote extended the preliminary hearing of John R. Walsh after his attorney, back in Chicago from a week away, requested the delay. The case concerns alleged illegal practices connected with the Chicago National Bank, and the hearing is reset to April 6.

The West Seattle city council appointed a three member committee to probe bribery allegations by Councilman Owls W. Davis against C M Maxwell of Seattle. Davis claims Maxwell offered 4000 for franchise influence. George R. Cooley is named by the council and Alexander Robinson by Davis. third member yet unnamed.
At Broadway High School a riot erupted during morning assembly as 106 male seniors jeered Professor Robert M. Garrett over his uncut hair. Garrett, enraged, ordered by vocal expression teacher Sanderson to respond. the crowd quieted without further incident.
J. D. Dickson narrowly escaped asphyxiation when his Forty third and First streets northwest home in Fremont burned last night. A neighbor roused him as flames spread from the first floor, and his pajama-clad leap from the second floor window left him unharmed. Dickson estimates losses around 1000 dollars. Separately, Carl Olson, reportedly insane, was taken from a boarding house at 1001 Prie Street by detectives, held in jail overnight, and later moved to the county jail for safekeeping amid fears for inmates’ safety.
The board of works discussed contractor A Goerig for delaying the Westlake Jr grading project. The contract required completion by August 3 but work finished February 3. An extension request due to unmoved buildings was denied again, with the board urging Goerig to pay part of the delinquency penalty.
