London March 19 The Chefoo correspondent for Reuters reports private dispatches of a severe engagement between Russian and Japanese forces on the Yalu river banks with Russia said to have captured 1800 prisoners.
Scripps News dispatch reports Russian military circles cheered by the Japanese halt in the Manchuria land push. Foreseeable delays reduce risk of rapid Japanese advance toward Mukden and Port Arthur as new Russian reinforcements arrive. Russian troops stream into Northern Korea in good condition while Japanese forces suffer typhus.
London dispatch reports Sebastopol that five of the remaining eight Black Sea battleships are to be overhauled for possible addition to the Baltic fleet when it sails for the Far East in June. The aim is to use this move to influence the Dardanelles issue before or as the Baltic force departs. the correspondent asserts the work signals strategic planning rather than Balkan danger.
