An unidentified man attempting entry to the imperial palace grounds triggered a premature bomb blast. A letter attacking the government was found on the body. Guards tightened at official residences as police increase precautions for Premier Takahashi and other leaders after threatening letters to several officials.
Ground broken next week for the Stuart building annex and a White building annex at Fifth Ave. and Union to connect with corridors around the block. Frank B. Cooper resigns as Seattle public schools superintendent effective August 1 after 21 years in the post. Rumors of a mayoral bid were denied by Mrs. Cooper who told The Star he will not run. The board accepted the sudden resignation at Friday’s meeting.
In Trenton New Jersey on March 18 Mrs Anna Cunningham a mother of five was held on two mixed juries for two nights. She asked to be excused from further jury duty citing irritation and family strain saying a married mother should stay home.
In San Francisco on March 18 the court worked to select two alternate jurors for the Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle trial to cover possible juror incapacity. Officials hoped to finish by noon so that testimony could begin Monday.
Fire early today destroyed the Crane cafe building in Olympia with losses estimated at 18000 dollars. No injuries reported. The blaze caused extensive damage to the structure and surrounding area.
Los Angeles March 18 The Obenchain jury remains deadlocked nine to three for conviction as deliberations continue after a night in lockup. Judge Reeve warned of possible dismissal if no progress, while the co defendant Arthur A Burch’s jurors had previously disagreed 10 to 3 against conviction.
John Kens dall, 25, jailed as the suspected assailant of Elsie Sparre a Elgin schoolteacher attacked March 3, was arrested in a North End house after a report of a crazy man occupying it. Kendall, an ex inmate of Monroe reformatory Medical Lake and Sedro Woolley asylums, had earlier been sent from Seattle for attacking an old man with a gaspipe bludgeon.
On March 18, three robbers in an automobile robbed two interstate bank messengers of $9,000. Two masked bandits then entered the Hoover and Allison Manufacturing plant in North Kansas City and fled with a $2,100 payroll after locking three employees in the vault.
Police answered a call at 1200 Marionet where Miss Carrie Hopkins kept her brother J. R. Hopkins prisoner in her room. She asked officers to guard him until her lawyer arrived to settle a civil suit. Hopkins summoned the fire department and the coroner but remained detained at noon amid the commotion.
